    Sure -

"Combo" drives like the one you're talking about actually have 2 laser systems inside; one designed for the focal length and track density of a DVD (which, BTW, actually have 2 layers, in case you didn't know) and one for that of the CD/RW subsystem, which focuses on a different length and ALSO has to be able to WRITE to the disc.

I've got a whole drawer full of drives with this problem - either the DVD or CD subsystem doesn't work; as the laser assemblies are non-serviceable in most cases, they make good parts donors for the load mechanisms and servo motors.

The lasers inside are worth money to the hackers in the world... they turn just about everything into laser..... Flashlight laser, cigarette lighter laser, beer can laser, shoe horn laser, etc...

Craig it's a Panasonic brand drive, it's at my shop so I don't know what the model number and such is. It's all gravy though because it's under warranty and I get a full replacement. WOOT!
