I have no idea what it is, but when I shutdown XP on my 31 it flashes a message about an exception. The message is gone before I can read it. Google research tends to finger a driver incompatability issue. I just loaded a new drive with the restore disk and a smattering of programs. The error is independent of any programs being opened between boot up and shutdown. Before I start taking stuff out of services and what loads at startup, is there a log I can access that stores these events? It's not hurting anything (yet). Just "interesting."

Have you looked in the Event Viewer System or Application tabs?
Start, Control Panel, Adminstrative Tools. You may need to enable Classic View to see the Event Viewer.

Or he could just hit its toes with a hammer until it confesses... -
mnem ftw! The e1kexpress wifi thing is the culprit. Is there a way to reload that driver or troubleshoot the install? I can use the ATT com manager and get a clean shutdown, but with that app connecting is flakey. Dualing wifi utility flakiness. What fun.

In your ATT Comm Mgr, there should be an option to turn off "Manage WiFi Connection." Try that & reboot to see if it's just a conflict because of 2 clients trying to manage the same WiFi connection or if it's REALLY a flaky driver.
A quick Google of "e1kexpress" indicates it's part of the driver stack for Intel Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, however... NOT WiFi at all. There are several common issues, all of whose fix currently involves rolling back the drivers to an older version; 10.5.1.0.
Is it possible you used one of the Intel Driver Update bots to find updated drivers for your 31?
If so, SILLY GEEKAZOID! You can't trust Intel any more than you can trust M$... they're just flip sides of the same unholy alliance.

Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see. -
The intel wifi manager bows out automatically if another utility takes over. Played some more and it looks like the relationship between the wifi apps and the exception is spurious.

Post back when you have further news; I'm curious to see what plagues you on this...

No further progress sleuthing the error, and I'm loading Win7 on the SSD. It will remain one of life's mysteries.
