Having upgraded to firefox 4 I find my CPU temperatures soaring into the 90s and the memory usage 2.5 times what it was with firefox 3.6 . Unable to watch u tube with other windows or tabs open.

After 3 weeks of persevering I just downloaded Chrome and memory usage is HALF of firefox 3.6 and ONE FIFTH of firefox 4.

is anyone else having this problem?

    I see !

You know most people hate the words IE but Microsoft has done a nice job with IE9. It's pretty good, stable and pretty secure and that's based on browser test scores. :)

Yes I might have to try I.E. but I must admit to being one of those sceptics.

Just did a little test:- same youtube on firefox and chrome with both running simultaneously

    Chrome = 80,000k mem usage
    firefox 4 = 165,000k mem usage

with firefox only(same vid) 200,000k mem usage

with Chrome only = 45,000k mem usage

Chrome is too slow and slows down whole system while loading pages. Memory leaks also.
    Try Mozilla Nightly 6.0a1 - it's good.
And for beginning disable/update all plugins in Mozilla 4.0. It's really better than 3.6.
Try to reinstall Windows if it doesn't help :)

Thanks for that, I will give Mozilla Nightly a go this evening.
And yes - I agree that firefox 4 is better than 3.6 but it is too hungry for my ancient Mk1 29

    Just an update.
Tried Internet explorer but similar problems with overheating.
Tried Firefox nightly and although the memory usage went up temperatures didn't and seem to be back in the 40 - 60 degree range.

I also tried K-meleon which is very quick and with minimum cpu and memory usage but lacks a little sophistication. I will keep it however as it works well for streaming catchup tv and movies.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Try Opera - it faster even then K-meleon. Opera - one brouser which is usable on my Portege 3480CT (600MHz 192MB).

I would check my thermal putty. I've got a mk I, and when it began heating up (180 and higher) running firefox and other programs, I resituated the putty (which I'd replaced earlier) and overheating stopped.
