Thank You Tough book, Capt.dogfish, and Kaptin Kid. For your help earlier.
I would like to know what is the largest HD I can put in my CF-27?
Thank You David C SR.![]()

David,
I assume the size is only limited by the operating system or processor limitations. 2.5" ATA/IDE.

160GB is about the largest you should put in. Go for a 5400rpm hard drive... It will speed your laptop up for a little...

I have not personally put a large capacity drive in a cf-27
The cf-27 normally came I believe with a 6 ,10 or 20gb hard drive
NTFS file system W2000 and XP will probably work in your cf-27 to a single partition of less than 137gb
If you use a 160gb drive it is best to partition it to smaller than 137gb
For sure you would want to make sure you install as part of the drivers the Intel Application Accelerator
Its usually part of the Panasonic driver downloads for your model
One of its purpose is to prevent problems with data loss with the larger drives in older models
Most of my older toughbooks have been upgraded with only 40 to 60 gb drives so I personally can not say for sure what issues you might encounter

So it would be wise to stay at 100 or less? Any brand suggestions, or ones that work better?
Thank You David C Sr -
David,
Try a Samsung SpinPoint or a Hitachi Travel Star in 5400rpm, remember, ATA/IDE not SATA. You can't go wrong. The CF-27 will not be a speed demon anyway. Your drivers are on the way.

Lots of really low capacity (40 GB and under) ATA/IDE versions too. The higher capacity non-SATA ones must be rare now if they aren't being manufactured any more. A bit like 50 pin SCSI drives which I need for my old Sun sparctstations, etc. Last year I stumbled across two brand new 9 GB 50 pin SCSI drives and got them for a bargain (few $ each).
I think I found something:
Samsung Spinpoint HM160HC 160GB Laptop Hard Drive PATA
Bummer no $$$ left to buy until I get paid again.Go for it those who can use them though!

Craig,
Samsung Spin Point 160gb ATA drives are available for around $60. M5 HM160HC, 5400rpm and not that noticeably slower than our favorite Hitachi 7200rpm drives which will probably cost 4 times that if you can find one.

EDIT: Good on ya mate, you found it while I was typing! -
I think those spinpoints I found are single-platter drives so more inherent reliability than multi-platter drives with lots of heads to go awry.
I suppose being 5400 instead of 7200 is also good for reliability. The 30 GB hitachi endurastar drive in my Opentec system is a fluid-bearing drive but it's way too small to be used on a Windows box. That system uses a gel cushion packing like the Panasonic systems. Pity they aren't made in 100 GB plus capacity. Don't look at the pricing of the Endurastar drives though - you'll fall off your chair at the normal retail. However I note there is a brand new 30 GB 'j' type endurastar (the more rugged one) on EBay in Europe for a very low starting price.

Thanks Again David C Sr -
David
Dont put a used hard drive in, as loss of data and your time installing and tweaking is worth far more than the $60 cost for a new hard drive
My recommendation for your older cf-27
Purchase a 80db or 120gb pata,ide 5400rpm brand new hard drive
Partition in ntfs in 2 equal size units
You will be very safe doing it this way

David,
No you don't owe me anything except to help out the next guy who needs help to get going. Be sure to print out the text file first, it will help you decipher the driver file names.

I purchased one today. 60GB for $40.00. I don't feel that was too bad?
It fit the spec's. That you gave me.
Thank You Again David C Sr. -
Plenty for a 27, they don't take well to bloatware.
