The CPUs themselves are NOT upgradable. You can swap 800MHz and 1GHz mobos between models but not the 600MHz... It is a slightly different motherboard.

Yup, swapping boards is the only way. Not too bad of a job.

    SiliconTi -

You cannot upgrade the CF-28 Mk1 MB (600MHZ) to any other model; the MB and lower chassis are very different from the Mk2/Mk3. In order to upgrade a Mk1, you essentially need to take the LCD off and swap out the entire lower half of the machine.

Obviously, unless you have a super-bright 13.3" touchscreen on your Mk1 this is probably not going to be worth the hassle, as you also have to disassemble the Mk1 LCD to get extra length on the video cable needed to plug into a Mk2/Mk3 lower unit.

The KB, TouchPad, battery & port covers interchange directly and you can use the Mk1 RIMM daughterboard for the GPS hack in any CF-28; the Mk1 HD Caddy is a "universal donor" for all models but it doesn't have the heater. The Mk2/Mk3 caddys are approx 3mm too tall to fit in a Mk1. The Battery door is also different on the Mk1.

So the answer in short is NO. If you need more power than the 600mhz, you need to get into a Mk2 or higher; the CF-29s are now selling as cheaply as I bought my first CF-28 for a couple years ago. Of course, they have their own constellation of strengths & weaknesses as well...

    Good luck widdat.
