The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. or

    rm -rf /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/

don't ask how just accept that I did

oh yeah , then try and rebuild the directory by removing and reinstalling all the common and esoteric pkgs I could find ...

sudo apt-cache search xorg | less just for reference

for those of you that are counting

then drift back here for Gork's excellent ublotto install notes because that's where google led me .

continue to search google for default contents of /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/

when I had a working 10.04 install sitting right in front of me . it's a 42" lcd screen I can see why I missed it .

and for those of you that are counting

Copy and paste 05-evdev.conf 10-synaptics.conf 10-vmmouse.conf and 10-wacom.conf to a folder on a portable drive and transfer to the laptop . Sounds easy ?

    now if you're really counting

the third time I mount the portable drive from the Oh-Krap prompt (at this point the gui is useless ) it occurs to me that if I had "safely removed" the device from the media center with the 42" screen that was easily missed , I might actually have something in the folder named unintelligent_excreta .

    still counting ?

way back when I rm -rf'd up I attempted to recreate the file I'd killed with
$ touch /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ so now I got a reminder of how this all started .rm -rf /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ (I get all queasy just typing it here)

    then

    mkdir /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/

    cp /temp/unintelligent_excreta/05-evdev.conf 10-synaptics.conf 10-vmmouse.conf 10-wacom.conf /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d

    done keeping score now ?

just thought I'd share an unusual day with you all

tnx for putting up with me Rick and thanx again for the good work Gork ...

Psst. Actually, like using the *.* /S command, because it's recursive; starting at the deepest level and working it's way out like a very hungry little insect larva.

This is not just anecdotal; it actually happened to a nearly completed Toy Story 2 film archive; it was only dumb luck that one of the editing staff had a nearly complete copy of all the working stuff "archived offsite".
