So I searched the forum and only found one similar thread and it was about a cf-28 and it was closed.
So heres my question, I have a MK4 that does not have a working touch screen and there is no option to turn it on in bios so I an wondering if I can buy a working digitizer and install it on my laptop? Will it work do I need a bios update???
Thanks

It will work but to make it simple you should get the complete upper casing with LCD as it will have all the necessary circuitry. No BIOS update required, it will show up when you install the new unit.
-
Thanks T2G i think it used to be a touch screen that is now broken so thought it would be cheaper to just replace the broken part.
Thanks

Well then if it does not show in the BIOS, the most likely problem is the controller located in the LCD enclosure or the cable harness. If just will not calibrate or will not respond then the panel is the problem. Still think it would be cheaper time wise to order the whole assembly so you cover all bases. But if you have more tiime than money than by all means troubleshoot it.

Are you sure it is supposed to have a touchscreen? post your full model number so we can tell.
-
Thought for sure this was a broken touch but I guess it was not.... wierd.
So can I still buy a full touch screen and install it?(full lid) and enable the touch?
model number

Correct, that model number is without touchscreen as denoted by the 3 in the model number. You can still add the touchscreen, the BIOS will detect it as soon as you plug in the controller. The touchpanels are glued in to the front bezel so I would still recommend getting the complete upper assembly that is touchscreen with the necessary components already in place. Minimally you would need the front bezel with touchpanel and the little controller board. The cabling should already be in place on your current unit.

Now the hard part is finding a good one on Ebay. Good luck
-
Pretty soon I will be doing this exact mod!
-
Ebay user "laptopaid" frequently has the parts for sale I have had good luck with his parts and shipping is usually free. I am not associated with them just giving them a plug based on my experience.

So I was able to get a used unit off a broken touch screen laptop and the face was in good condition, pulled off the old non-touch put on the new(used) one and its now shows up in the bios. BUt when i boot into windows no response from the calibration software not even uncontrolled response from the screen???? Am I missing something? (btw I did a fresh recovery after the screen swap as I had a drive die as well so all the drivers should be fresh and new)
Any more tips or is the new screen toast as far as the touch goes???
Thanks. -
If you installed the recovery CD for the non touch unit then it will not load the touchscreen driver. Device manager should show "touchpad/touchscreen" instead of just "touchpad". Also did you enable it in the BIOS? and did you connect the touchpanel ribbon to the controller? if all that checks out then you may have just bought a bad touchpanel.

The ribbon cable is a 4 wire mylar flat cable that is attached to the glass about one third of the way up on the right side of the panel. It connects directly to the controller board and is covered by a black piece of plastic.
-
I used a whole screen like was suggested so I did not open the screen casing.
-
so i got another screen, not as good condition
but it does work though!
Thanks for everyones help.

Do they have screen protectors on them? Maybe you can swap the good protector over to the good touchscreen.

the broken one is a bit better but not that much to go threw the hastle. I heard the protector is a pain to get back on.
