I should have asked the original owner of this cf-29 to ship me a replacment cdrom but did not bother with it. He did state it was running when shipped. This has been a year now.

Want to know what are the common reasons why a cdrom light would blink over and over, and hear the stepper motor cyccle over and over, with any cd that I place in the tray? I removed the cdrom, dissembled it down to the shell with connector. Did not remove the foil to open it up. Reconnected the connector. Reassembled the cdrom. Then reinserted it back into the laptop. The laptop is still producing the same cyling blinking light with cdrom installed in the player.

Can this be repaired, or replaced? I need to reformat the hard drive and since the cf-29 mk5 does not have the ability to boot off a thumbdrive, then I am stuck.

Are you trying to boot from the cd drive? If so, it is possible the drive has been replaced and is not set to master. Other than that I think the drive is toast...

    Hi lortech

I pretty sure the 29 MK5 will boot to usb. Put any thumb drive and boot or reboot and enter the bios by pressing F2. Move the usb hdd to first boot. Or what ever the thumb drive shows up as.

I did not see the usb it in the bios list but, did see a way to book from the lan network. Anyone try this before? I could just put a share on another windows work station and install from that cdroms work station.

The CF-29 has the ability to boot from USB. You have to include it (the most time it is excluded) in the boot order and then you could move it via F5/F6 to the top of the boot-device-list.

    My thumb-drive shows up as a USB-HDD.

And yes the cdrom can be replaced with any drive if you solder the R2 pads in your cdrom-caddy together :)

So my CF-29 is using a LG DVD Burner.

Take a look to the attached picture :)

I think I still have a 2-3 year old 17 inch screen acer laptop that literately fell apart "screws kept coming out, then something inside did not work" I think it had a cd/dvd rom burner, like my Panasonic does.

Pretty sure the plastic gear thread that guide the laser from going forward and backward turn into pieces. Check it out! It can be replace from other drive if you have laying around.

I ignored this problem for a year, and came across this thread again. I removed the cdrom and rotated it on its x acis and heard thumping inside. removed covers and the laser is free floating on its shaft so,supect gear damage.

just removed the back cover.sure enough plastic piece that has gear teeth attached laser body was broken. I would as well go out and buy another used one for 45 dollars or repair this one.

    Google is my friend....

Using a CD / DVD RW 200mW laser diode for cutting foam? - RC Groups

Of the several other posts I read, The conclusion seems to be that you will need about a 2 watt laser. Black foam will cut with less power than white foam.
A cd drives laser is 200mw...So the answer is No it won't work..

    Here is the google search..

I don't know when Mnementh will be back on. I called and talked to him over a week ago. He and his family are moved in, no internet as of yet. Really crappy cell service in his house, perfect signal about a mile up the road. He will be back when he can.
