I swapped them out then got a blue screen of death so i swaped them out again and now i have lost my touch pad and key board. I believe i broke the connectors off and now i am back at square one. If anyone has any tips on how to replace or modify the conectors please post thanks

ouch.. costly learning experience!

Sounds like that cf-28 is dead. Probably best just to get a new one.
You must have been pretty rough with it swaping it in and out to break the connectors. -
The BSOD was probably due to the OS from your 600MHZ sensing the change in hardware on the new 1ghz. If you would have reloaded a fresh OS you would have been fine.

dragonsoldier, my condolances... as an electronics/computer/anything techno repair professional with over 20 years on the job, I've fixed/FUBBed/haXX0red just about anything you can imagine. I've let the magic smoke out myself more than a few times, and I feel for ya.

Before you go getting too upset over the connector issue, do yourself a favor. Check the connectors carefully; there is a little plastic latch mechanism that is easy to overlook or insert the cable on the wrong side of. You may need a magnifier of some sort to see it clearly; but make sure before you insert the cable that the latch is in the unlocked position; then make sure you push the cable all the way in, but not hard enough to break the main body of the connector. Now, while holding the cable in place, flip the latch gently to the locked position. It should take very little force to make it click into place.
Oh, and don't reverse the connections for the KB and glidepoint. I think they might go in if you force them; I dunno if that will do damage, but I promise they won't work that way.
D'OH!:rolleyes2:
Dewed... if you got this 1GHZ mobo IN the lower shell it came in, why don't you try reassembling it in its original shell & attach the LCD, KB & etc from your 600MHZ unit onto it?
Or was it the 1GHZ mobo you think you broke the connectors on?
If you can get it all together that way, remember that, as tough-to-go said earlier, your copy of windows will prolly not like the change in environment & require a fresh install. If you have data file you need to save from the HD, plug it into a cheapo USB 2.5" enclosure (about 8-10 bux on eBay) & save them to the HD on another computer before starting your install.
Anyhoo - hope this gives you a little... hope for your project.
Laterz,

My condolences too.. Sometimes things to happened and then you will learn a lesson. That is part of it. Try to look carefully on the connector latch sometimes it came off without a damage and try to put em back. Well, if no use, list on ebay for parts and buy another one.

Tough-2-go might have it right with that one. I couldn't pull my 600 drive, throw it in the 800 caddy, and have it run either. Windows isn't smart enough for that. My linux install ran fine though..
Mac OS X works great like that too... I pulled all of my drives out of my old machine, and installed them into a dual processor machine, and it fired right up.
I think it might possibly be Microsoft attempting to squash out piracy so you don't run an OS that wasn't installed with that hardware. -
Come to think of it... Modly may have something here... I swapped a mobo and tried reloading XP and it sensed the hardware change when I tried to activate it. You then have to click on the button to ask for a new key. You will check the box that says "Hardware change" and ask for a new set of keys. Microsoft will generate a new set of keys for you... Then you call up, use the touchphone to punch in the new keys and it will reset the original COA for you.
It worked like a charm for me... As for the connections... mnem is right... Check your connections as you may have one backward. Did you remember to hook up the tiny little ribbon cable under the motherboard that leads to the touchpad? It's easy to miss! -
When I used Windows, a good trick when I knew I was trying to move a HD loaded with Windows into a new motherboard/peripheral setup, was on the old one's last boot, fire it up in Safe Mode, and run through device manager and remove everything remotely associated with the old motherboard (even IDE controllers, etc).
Swap the drive, have your Windows disc at hand, and let it go crazy with NEW HARDWARE FOUND! NEW HARDWARE FOUND! If you have particular drivers you know you need (sound, vidcard, whatever) have those at hand as well.
This was back in the W98 days, it probably is easier now. -

CPUID, CPU Ser # if not disabled in BIOS, MB BIOS Version/Checksum/Vendor ID, MB Product ID, any IDE device PID but ESPECIALLY boot HD PID & SIZE, amount of installed RAM, Amount Video RAM/Video card PID, any Cerberos-class hardware security key that may be installed and smart battery PID if on a laptop. The first 5 0r 6 items are most critical; changing even 1 or 2 of these CAN cause Winblows to force you to reactivate once you log in; usually it takes more than just one to cause it to lock you out with a BSOD (Usually a single hex code 0X00000000 or 0X0F000000, if my soldering-fumes addled brain recalls correctly). You can often get it to boot again by recopying the MBR from within recovery console; however you will usually HAVE to reactivate before it will even let you log in. If the install of Losedows on the drive had a working internet connection, it will often be able to reactivate with that connection; I've done it several times & had no issues as long as my OS was legit; of course if it's been hacked or you've got six machines with the same COA you may be in for some headaches...

In additional to the safe mode boot you can also run sysprep, this will strip the hardware configuration and sid. And force xp to rediscover all hardware at next boot.

Ewww...
Okay, so I see now I've lost my 1 sad little point of rep power... I assume that means I've offended someone.
