So I see a lot of posts about the 28, 29 and 30. The 30 is pretty pricey (for me) so I have no experience with it. I have a work issued 29 I use in my patrol car that I love to bits. I just bought a 1Ghz 28 that I'm on now and I like it too, although I wish I could squeze more RAM out of it (but for general surfing and email, it's totally fine, Dreamweaver and Photoshop max it out).

So what seems to be the more popular model and why? Lots of 28's on ebay, and 29's also.

    Rob,
Six months or so ago CF-29s were selling on eBay for well north of $1000 generally. CF-30s were virtually non-existent on eBay. You had to hustle to get a good CF-28, MKII or III, for less than $350. That has all changed. In July I bought a CF-30, out of box new, with 22 month warranty from Panasonic for $1800 net to me. What happened? CF-29s seem to have reached End of Life for the government and big corporate users and Panasonic seems to have a new policy of deep discounts on some CF-30 models. I leap frogged the CF-29 for the CF-30 because I got lucky and got the 30 for only about $3-400 more than a comparable CF-29 at the time. The advantages of the CF-30 over the 29, even just the battery life, made it worth it to me. Today, 6 weeks later, the choice would have been harder as there are so many good deals on CF-29s around. For modding, I don't think you can beat the CF-28, it just has so much room inside for messing about and adding stuff.

I would say the cf-28 is a great starter for modding seeing how they are pretty cheap now. Like cap said they have alot of modding space. Now that there are cf-29's on ebay for alot cheaper now it is a nice machine to grab. There is alot of modding that can be done to these now as well. I picked up a cf-29 and i love it to death. Next will be a cf-18 to play with. I would love to get a cf-30 but they are still pretty expensive. I could sell my cf-29 for a chunk of money since it has every option that they offered plus more upgrades and then put that towards a cf-30 but i will not pick up a cf-30 unless it is exactly the one i want. Which is pretty much the most expensive ones :)
