The hardware is all there - Device Manager tells me so. It also tells me the device driver is not installed (giving code 28 as the error code)! I don't think I accidentally deleted it but did dump a bunch of stuff using Add or Remove Programs recently, so maybe I did. Duh.

I don't get a volume control icon on the task bar and going into control panel then into sound/audio says there is no audio device available. The sorta confirms the drivers are banished to the ether.

Anyway, I clicked on 'Reinstall Driver' in Device Manager and it can't find anything when I tell the wizard to search for new drivers (I don't have a Win Xp CD set for the CF-29 either).

On the Toughbook support site, the driver search function is saying it has no downloads available for CF-29 Mk4's running Win xp for audio drivers. I did find a generic audio driver which I downloaded and unpacked, but a reboot didn't change anything. The driver file was sound_29_4_d040820.exe being for a Mk4 CF-29 (which my system is).

    Craig.

Postfix to all this - after a bit of rooting around I realised that running the .exe file above to unpack the files into c:\util2\drivers\sound had not actually INSTALLED anything into Windows! I found an install utility that was part of the unpacked files, ran that, and once all the setup had been done the audio is working again.

Goes to show that when you think something has done what you expected, double-check! I should have known coming from a *nix background that extracting files usually doesn't equal installing/compiling/etc.

I'm having the same exact issue only I never found the install utility. Can you tell me where its located and what its named. I have a CF-29 Mk3 if that makes a difference.

    Here's what I found:

    sound_29_3_d030899.exe [376.3 kb]

I found it on the Panasonic Support site, but I also found it on the Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 Drivers web site.

I've got the driver but I have the problem of it not installing even though it acts like it has.
I just can't figure out how to get to the install utility to complete the actual install.
I opened the file and there's nothing in there that acts as an .exe.

Try this. Open Device Manager, right click the audio device, select properties, selct update driver, point it to stac97.inf in the sound driver folder.

As per my postfix to the original message, the .exe file is a self-extracting archive. I thought initially that it also installed the driver at the same time but all it does is unpack all the files. You need to take an additional step for the driver to actually be installed.

I went to another forum and got the help I needed instead of being directed to a sticky that only links me to where I can download drivers. Thanks for all the help.

It mentioned here so many time and time again. People need patience not to get what they ask instantly. We don't want to have so many question with the same subject scathered here evrywhere while the answer is below under your nose. There are a lot people here contributed and put it on one place for newbies. Thats why at the top of this forum we urge new member to read the FAQ.

All that was in the FAQ was WHERE to find the drivers. In this case just finding them wasn't enough. Why not just answer the question instead of making a big deal about the question being answered? Now this thread is twice as long as it would have been if that was done. "below your nose" ? Not quite. But thanks anyway.

Raidmax, welcome to the forum. The info you needed is in fact in the stickies, you just have to put in a little effort. Congratulations on insulting one of the most helpful and knowledgeable members in only five posts. Good luck when you really need some help. And you won't find it on another forum, the pros are here.

RapidMax that step (this quoted post below) was right below your question about how to complete the install, this should have done it for you. Did you see the post and try this?
It seems you only read the post after the quoted one before getting mad. Instead of getting angry you could have tried this step. If it did not make sense, or did not work you could have asked for clarification or more assistance.
The driver install you mentioned in your post that you ran. Are you referring to the file you downloaded from Panasonic, or the installer application it extracted into the c:\util2\drivers\sound folder?

I was left wondering about that too. It was explained in post #5.... I guess some are too much in a hurry to pay attention.

We try not to flame people around here as other forums do as we are, for the most part, an older crowd with some wicked smart youngsters along in the mix.

    Hope you resolved your problem.
