I sent Shawn an email with this question but thought I would ask here also. a guy here wants to grab the free internet in the campground, boost the signal and secure it for a home network. Possible?

It's not really a question for Panasonic forum, but if you want to hear the answer...

Easy to buy a signal booster as they are for sale everywhere.
Secure it as in encryption would seem unlikely.
If the main gateway/router is device A
    The booster is B
    His laptop is C
Possibly he could find a way to secure/encrypt the signal from C to B and B to C.
But he can not encrypt the signal from or to A. That requires an individual password on A

If C encodes his info then B decodes it and sends it to A. Then A sends it to the internet...But anyone in the campground can receive the decoded signal from B to A.

Connect Mikrotik SXT Lite2 to that free network (wireless) and to his home router via cable. That's all.

According to the Mikrotik SXT Lite2 instructions the SXT has to be connected to the access point with an Ethernet cable before it will encrypt the wireless.

Without having direct physical access to the campground router/access point he can not setup an encrypted signal.

He does not have a home router..That's the whole problem..He wants to acquire free wifi...

User doesn't need encryption, it's just misunderstanding and use of incorrect words :)
So Mikrotik doesn't have to encrypt anything in this case. It will just receive that free Wi-Fi signal and transfer to home router. So, if user has only laptop now and wants to create Wi-Fi private home network with password, he will have to buy both Wi-Fi receiver (Mikrotik etc.) to receive free Wi-Fi signal and home Wi-Fi router to create home Wi-Fi network :)
Free Wi-Fi ----air---- Mikrotik ---cable---Home router.

From the email .... He does want a secure, encrypted network...

.... wants to create a secure home network using an unsecured wifi
    signal ..........

His home network would be secure.....until it goes through the unsecured free wifi. I could not use the information going from the laptop to HIS router.. But I could intercept and use his information going from the Mikrotik to the open free wifi access point

I assure you, "secure home network" means just Wi-Fi network with password :))

i did not see this anywhere in the thread ... it is called "theft of service" .
the service is available to "campers" , it was not put in place by a private party to be used as a constant connection to an "unassociated" party .

i am asked about similar situations and i always pull a pontious pilate on the matter .

But the wpa password causes the data to be encrypted doesn't it?

Home Wi-Fi router will use WPA. That's it, password-protected secure encrypted network :))

You know what they say....you get what you pay for....I think your friend is asking too much for something that is free. If anyone in the campsite knows anything about hacking they will have fun with him. If he wants secure and feel safe then tell him to pay for it.....

Thanks for the answers,I assumed as much but networking is not my thing. He saw my repair ad and asked if I could set this up,I told him he would need his own service.

Often open networks don't have admin password for the router, so it's possible to login into that router, change Wi-Fi network and admin passwords, and, voila, this network is yours, secure, private home network :)))
