Their "LetsNote" series for lack of a better term instead of "fully rugged" or whatever. I realize it's not the Toughbook of choice for the big bears but.

that does look very cool, but definitely does not appear to be rugged at all. looks can be deceiving though. i am guessing it costs 5k

That is a pretty machine.

Looks interesting.. kinda blah though...

I got this from "tough online" guess we will have to wait on a price.
Toughbook C1
Shipping July 2010
Introducing the worlds lightest 12.1" convertible tablet PC, the new 3.2 lb. Panasonic Toughbook C1. The Toughbook C1 features a unique, durable triple hinge design using two hinges for opening and closing the screen, and another hinge for rotating the screen into tablet mode. A spill-resistant keyboard and the ability to survive up to a 30" drop are additional performance benefits. -

Still no slate mode.
Bleah.

Why bother? -

mnem, what do you mean slate mode? like the ipad?
 -

The iPad is just a suped-up TC1100. But yes, THAT is what Tablet OS was intended for. Keeping a keyboard attached to a tablet is like leaving the trailer on an airplane after it's delivered...

The TC1100 never had a proper touch-screen OS. There were some good touch-screen apps, but the OS made working on the tablet a real chore.
One thing you do have give Apple credit for is that they do understand user interfaces better then anyone else. So I have no doubt the iPad will be a success. -

It is an Iphone with a glandular disorder. Hopefully you will at least be able to change the batteries yourself.

well without the phone part. looks like my friends ipod just bigger.

I had a TC1100, and I still have a Fujitsu 5032D slate. Windows 7 makes it "bearable" but Apple is known for form over function and Microsoft I swear still has programmers and engineers designing their UI.

I really LIKE working with my slate; once it learned my handwriting (a monumental task, I promise you) I only occasionally need a keyboard. Funny thing, I also need a chair at those times, and the keyboard is right in front of it.

NOPE. No USB, no SD or equivalent slot either. Oh... and STILL... NO FLASH IN THE WEB BROWSER.
My TC1100? All of the above, PLUS TriBand WiFi AND VeriSuck Broadband. 5 years ago.
The iPad is gorgeous. Even with ALL THE SHORTCOMINGS I listed above, I STILL WANT one.
Why?
Because aside from the TC1100 which I already have, it is the closest thing to Picard's PADD we are ever going to see... Except, of course, for HP's NEW Slate PC, which is just a TC110 with Thyroid disease.
The Fujitsu slates have ALWAYS been pretty clunky (talk about designed by programmers & engineers) but at least Fujitsu didn't give up on them like HP did when they couldn't sell them to the Pointy-Haired-Boss types.
Nonetheless, I would happily kick Jobs in the nads for not including a USB port on the iPad.

Was considering this as a future replacement for my CF-W7 until I realised that it doesn't have a built-in optical disk drive which is a deal-killer for me....
