I ordered a backlit keyboard, installed it and found this problem. Everything worked but whats strange was, when I pressed fn and then f12 the keyboard would lite up but when I let go of f12 it would turn off. So basically it only works if you keep the f12 depressed. Why? Panasonic had no idea. Anyone know. Thanks.

What operating system? If Windows 7 enter hotkeys in search this thread in this forum.
You should probably state the Mark that you are using as well.
Do the other function keys work?
And possibly confirm cables are seated properly.

    Good luck.

    Two more things.
Did you seat the narrow cable facing right with the shiny side up?

    Welcome to the forum.

Yes I did. It would work but not stay lit. cf29 running factory xp. Keyboard factory used. Just strange, how come when I let go of f12 the keyboard turns off. I have a feeling bad keyboard. I sent it back. Thanks, nice of you people to have me. all other functions worked except for the f11 911 calling.

    Welcome!

Just for clarification, when you plugged in the long ribbon did you bend it back toward the front of the machine? This is what Gork mentioned above.
The other two cables plug in as they lay but for some reason the one closest to the back of the machine must be flipped over backwards and then plugged in.
Don't fold it, loop it back, keep the bend's radius about 2mm.
Also re-seating the cable may do it, it's easy to not get it square and fully seated.
    That should do it.

Here's a pretty good written description of keyboard installation. Though I know for a fact that he has only done five or six.
I uh uh I mean the guy that wrote this stole all these ideas from people that know what they are doing. :D

    G'luck with your new one.
