I know the "m" stands for mobile and you can step down the clock speed to reserve battery. My question is will a normal p4 (SL6SB) with big heatsink work in place of a p4m (SL6WZ) if they both have identical specs (almost)?

    I'm looking to replace my 1.8 p4m with a 2.6 p4 in a cf-72.

Yes it would work, and NO, DON'T do it.... it will overheat for sure!!! if you need more speed, consider upping the ram (to 1GB for example) and go through MSCONFIG in windows and clear up the crap that starts up with the computer. or if all else fails, wipe/reload XP... a P4M 1.8 with 1GB DDR1 RAM should run XP Pro pretty quickly, so if its that slow, something else is the issue.... also what is the speed of your hard drive? because if it is a 4200RPM one then that will severely slow you down as well. lemme know

    Thanks

well, if u need to speed up ur comp, download Ccleaner. go google it. use it to get rid of all sorts of stuff that will kill performance. next scan for any viruses and spyware with ur anti malware software. after that tell us the results. installing a couple more gigs of ram is also good.

Although CCleaner will work, CCleaner also installs more spyware on your computer so I personally would stay away from that... Super Antispyware is good program that I have found, along with adaware. You can also use hijack this if you want but you gotta be careful with that program because if you don't know what you are doing with it you can remove something that Windoze needs to run

Wow, thanks for the the info. I have been upgrading my 72 for a few months now with a 1 gig mem stick, 250gig hd (5400), extra battery, 600mw engenious internal wireless card and a new untainted xp install. The only thing left is the processor.
I contract for a telcom company so it's important my laptop run any new software needed and I refuse to use anything but a toughbook.

I’m with ya there; I’m a firm believer in CCleaner and use it several times a day. Other than that, good stuff. A Pentium 4m should be able to run XP without problems, Of course it does it better with more RAM and a faster HDD. Keeping your system free of unwanted spyware, bloatware and unnecessary start up junk will be most advantageous. Because no matter how fast the system is, garbage will always win over hardware. Kind of like saying, a small thorn can bring down a giant bear. :p

    Hmmmm….?

You got rid of CCleaner, and that fixed his problem? CCleaner doesn’t do anything unless it’s executed, just being there will not harm anything? Now if you use the registry cleaner and don’t know what you’re doing, that might cause a problem. But hey, if someone is not comfortable using something, do it the hard way.

No need to be sorry, you’re telling your experience about the program and who am I to argue that? I put it on every computer I work on, since my friends come to me for free help. And since it’s free, that program saves me a lot of hours being on their system, than my own. :D

I used to be that way too. I used to do network administration and installation and man after hours of sitting on the computers setting up networks, restrictions, programs, printers and tons of other crap then pulling miles of cat5 i never wanted to use my own computer once i got home. Now I am out of doing that so i tend to find it fun to tinker with my computer toys again.
