So I just bought a mk1 CF-19 on EBay and now I'm planning out the refurbishment. I've read some on this forum and I've also been looking over the Operating Instructions and the Service Manual.

    • add 2GB of memory - pretty obvious
    • replace coin cell battery - shouldn't be a problem
    • replace CF-VZSU48U battery? - five years is a long time
    • replace 80GB hard drive with SATA SSD

Is there anything else that comes to mind for an average refurbishment/upgrade? Are there any recommended SSD drives? If I replace the hard drive with an SSD, can/should I snip the hard drive heater out?

1- you will have to remove the base (not just the ram cover)to reach the second ram slot
    2- what,they last 10 years
3-use it for a while, it might need cycling and you might get ok runtime after a few cycles
4-Intel X25M , not the cheapest but reliable , the operating specs on ssd drives say don't use below freezing,so leave the heater in place

    Thanks.

FWIW it arrives tomorrow. It actually already arrived at the UPS facility in San Pablo, CA on Monday and there it is scheduled to sit waiting for a Thursday delivery. And you thought the Post Office was bad.

I'm new to the Toughbook and I come from an OSX/Linux background. So I have some work ahead of me.

I have purchased and liquidated TONS of these laptops... I know what you bought and I know where they are coming from. They generally have LESS THAN 100 cycles on the batteries and LESS THAN 3000 hours on the unit.

Also the main coin cell battery should be fine for a LONG time (Like Alex said already), so you are just wasting your time there

These laptops were manufactured between August - December of 2007 and are about 3.5 years old. The touchscreens work GREAT and MOST have ZERO wear on the panels. Most have hour counts between 1000 and 3000 hours, although I have seen them as low as 60 hours and 2 cycles on the battery.

If I was you, I'd replace the port rubbers as those will obviously be worn and missing.

    Thanks

lol I've just acquired one of these beauties as well. I'm going to put win7 on it and 3/4GB of RAM I have lying around. Will look into an SSD later.

I'm pretty stoked to get the 19, the small fleet of 18's I already have (even the recent additions of a couple of CF-18K's) are getting too hard/expensive to keep updated RAM and HDD wise.

I really need to stop this toughbook addiction.

    EDIT: while you're there guys...
Does this have a expresscard slot, or just 2x cardbus (I don't have it in hand just yet)? I'm getting conflicting info off the internets.
