since you apparently have the touchscreen model, the other serial port is for the touchscreen, AFIK the digitizer model has no com ports, as for testing it out a serial based GPS reciever or a loop back plug works just great

COM2 is only available on the port replicator or docking station.

Thanks whats a loopback plug ??
Thanks
Steve -

just a serial plug that has input lines directed to output lines
heres the ones I have, or you can do a search and build your own for under $5

So how can i build my own, do i have to short pin 2 and 3 ?
Thanks
Steve -

few more connections then just 2 and 3
take a look here for all the most common serial pinouts

So looks like i have to buy somthing then to test, you say the other coms post is for touchscreen, other is coms 2 ??????

What are you hooking up on your com 1 port
Why don't you just hook up the device to the com port, and then within windows, use HyperTerminal to read the info
Btw, tough-2-go knows his Toughbooks and has already stated that com 2 in your case is for the docking station, so its not for you touchsceen

I think in one of the Service Manuals (One of the more complete ones!) it explains how to make the loop-back plug. Do you have a service manual?
 -

Hi Thanks for the info but i dont have the service manual

PM me your email address and the exact model number and I'll send you everything for your model in a zipped file... All the manuals... User, Service, Schematic, board layout, etc...
