Probably already answered, but I am too busy to search at this moment.
I am going to install a Kingston 64gb sata SSD in my cf29. I want to either clone the existing drive ( settings to use in clone software??)or re install using my restore disk. I prefer to clone it, but.....
Will either of these methods destroy the Win7 trim partitioning?

Better be sure to use Win 7 as well! No TRIM support in XP!

Yes I have a sata adapter that I can make work. Either resolder the connector or custom fab some new foam. SSD doesn't need as much shock protection anyway. I am currently using the drive in a win7 laptop. I'm going to just delete all files. Maybe reformat in the win 7 box.

Does the factory restore change an existing partition or formatting?

I always understood it wipes every thing off it. Myself I would use the restore disk...most SSD sites will tell you when installing one to do a full install.

But won't that eliminate all the SSD required partitioning and formatting for the trim and garbage collection?

That I could not tell you, I just know when I do a full install I have less trouble down the road but that's just me...some have had good luck cloning drives.

I just did a factory recovery on CF-19 on an emptied SSD (intel 320 160gb).
I then checked with a partitioning tool (fdisk) and the 2 partitions that were created, are 4k aligned.

Yes...the factory restore deletes the existing partition. :(

If you create a partition using Vista or Win7 Set-up disks to give an Aligned partition-offset optimised for SSD's & then run an XP Panny Restore Disc, say bye,bye to the GOOD partition you have just created & hello to a new XP partition with the wrong partition-offset for SSD use.

A clean installation of Win7 is not an issue because it creates the correct partition-offset by default.

Edit: I missed the post by gear6....4K aligned in Win7...NOT XP. :hi2:

That's what I thought. So either I do an install with a XP disk and choose existing partition or find a copy drive program that does not use a block by block transfer.

Correct-o-mundo....my only attempt with cloning lead to random BSOD's so I've never bothered again. 100% sure that Springfield used a cloning software that does the 4K alignment on a new partition but I don't recall which one he used.

I used Vista set-up disc to create a 4K aligned partition & then XP OEM to the existing partition....load the drivers manually.

Long winded way of doing things, but works. :)

Edit : I looked at Aomei Partition Assistant several months ago, I think it was a free-bee download, so it should be possible to use Panny Restore & then move the Partition....may be worth trying if it's free.

I use HD Clone. It has an option for 4K alignment when restoring/cloning. Just used HD Clone to put a SSD in a CF-74 Mk3 with Win7 Ultimate 64 bit and it worked great.

If you are running win7, you are fine. I am going to run win xp, which isn't designed to run on a SSD. Win 7 is designed for SSD. I already have xp installed and running on my cf29. I am being lazy and don't want to do a fresh install unless I have to.
If I just install xp, it won't be right for a SSD. If I clone my existing drive, it won't be right for a SSD, unless I use specific cloning software designed for a SSD. If I reinstall using my Panasonic restore disk, it won't be right for a SSD.

Drive is here. HD Clone locks up. Once at 33% once at 35% and twice at 37%. Off to get Clonezilla............................................This is on my cf52, a SSD to a SSD...

    I put XP on a 128 SSD on a CF30 though, following the advice of the Guys at;

    Forums

It worked great, only had it on for a month or two then changed to Win7 with the XP mode which works just great for all my XP stuff. I have a thingy in the quick launch bar or what ever its called and once the xp mode is opened can just toggle between the 7 and XP. Just have to set it up for internet and all that stuff like a new OS. Worked very well I was impressed. Did the same on a CF31 with 64bit. Not sure of the OS size difference between XP and 7though.
