Replaced f4 on the motherboard now the screen I had on it originally that was good, is now completely white on during and after start up can still boot all the way.

I haven’t as yet tried that cf28 on an external monitor. I have however tried it the white screen on another good main board and it still remains still white.

I daren’t try a good screen on the board I replaced the f4 fuse on as I don’t want more white screens any ideas???

    Many thanks Alex

(Apologizes for the lack of punctuation originally)

It might be a good idea for u to put some punctuation marks and standard grammar so that your post is readable :)

A white screen indicates that the backlight is coming on but video is not being processed(when there is no signal, that still gets processed as a black screen, which requires ALL pixels to be turned on to maximum opacity); if the output from VGA on your CF-28 is good, I'd be looking at the connector inside at the LCD, then look for small SMD fuses on the board on back of the LCD. After that, I'd look for another LCD.

Cut to the chase, man! I have a schedule to keep!

I second that. It's possible you fried a component on the lcd or burned a trace on the cable.

Depending on how much you played with it... Also look for pulled or broken wires on the connectors where they plug into the mobo and also on the back of the LCD. (If you played around with that area.) The wires are tiny and easy to break! Of course you need to check out what mnem and Zero said too.

Hey Kuncheesh.... Shadup and get back over to the dell forum. We have A LOT of people here from foreign countries so spelling doesn't count around here... The last thing we need is a part-time school marm!

Don't forget his wonderful use of "u" instead of "you" while correcting somebody else... Priceless.

Inspect for pulled pins in the connectors or see if a connector is completely disconnected. Try pulling off the top cover on the LCD, and see if a connector was pulled loose in there while doing the swap.

i don't have any suggestions for repairs, but did want to mention that i've got a 27 with similar symptoms. When you look directly at the screen, it is bright white all over. BUT.. if you look at it on a sharp angle, you can actually read the text! I'm not sure what caused it, but I'm pretty sure it's in the LCD's internal driver circuitry and not the 27's mobo.

    Well,
I have no clue whatsoever, but for the sake of driving up post count, and "Google" Ranking I thought I'd chime in. However, if it makes anyone here feel any better, I really do feel for ya Bro'[/I.

What model 27? There are 2 that have fairly easy fixes but you probably don't have either one.

I think it was an EB.. I'll have to find it in the pile and take a look. I know it was a PII-300.

I've got one for ya.. do you know if they ever came up with a mod to use the philips-hosiden 12" LCDs on the PII's? I read somewhere about a mod to the P-266 mobo to use the newer (i think they're toshiba?) screens because the philips-hosiden screens became unavailable. Reason why I ask is I have several PII-300s with those stupid 10" screens, and several P-266's with nice 12" philips-hosiden screens :)

In my case, no. I put another screen on the mobo and it fired right up. Conversely, the white screen on another known-good mobo was still white!

Most likely it was an EB. If it was an EA, that's a real easy fix. No clue about the mod.

Zero- can you share those easy fixes for the EA just to add to our knowledge base?

    Thx

Yep, the 10". On the back of the EA lcd in the top left corner (from the front) is a ribbon cable with a hard flat backing that just unplugs (doesn't slide in like the main cable but plugs). The connection gets a little loose from time to time and just unplugging & replugging it back in does the trick something like 85% of the time. A little strip of electrical tape does well to hold it on.

The RJ is the other one. The cable plugs in on the left side. Again, plugs is the key. It also pops loose and just a tiny jiggle will give crazy lines or sometimes solid white. Taping it down and adding a thin piece of foam to push against it from the rear cab does the trick. There is one other possible little thing to do on it. In the bottom corner is a flat, black, plastic square covering yet another plug. The pins on both connectors like to crack & just need to be resoldered.
