    hi there!
my toughbook did have windows 98 second edition, but the peripherals i bought needed minimum windows xp to install them so i installed my windows xp sp3
and all seems ok if a little slow!!
but i have read through the posts and seen that people say not to run xp pro sp3 on this model,, but the devices i have wont work on windows 98 any ideas as to what to do?
    thanks

You can run SP3 on that... And set up wifi in place of your modem. You can run an external u.fl to SMA bulkhead for an external antenna.

Like TB said - XP SP3 runs fine - just a bit slow and resource hungry. Boot-up just gives you time to make some coffee and read the papers. If you want something a little more appropriate to the speed of your machine, Win 2k works well on the CF-27, you just need to check that your peripherals will work.

Usually just taking the battery out and reinserting does the trick - no idea why it happens, but it does!

Not sure about the touchscreen. The usual suspect for the unknown device in device manager is the hotkeys driver. I don't know if it will help Bigguy but have you run the hardware diagnostics program? You extract it in Windows but have to run it in DOS.

I can confirm it's not got touch screen. the J in the model number gives it away.
the unknown device could well be the rim modem. it was on mine.
