Woo Hoo
I've been seeing a lot of new low-priced W8's on the Flea this week, even bid on one at $600. But it went higher (thank goodness) so instead I jumped on this deal for $402 OTD.
Panasonic must be dumping them -- end of life? -- so all the FleaBay sellers are capitalizing on the drop.
(Hope I don't see one in a few weeks for $300 and kick myself ....)

Looks like a great deal! Hope they all ship? Seems like they are going to sell out a HUGE inventory fast. Has anyone installed WINDOWS 7 Pro or Home 64 bit on the W8? Any problems with install, drivers? And does any one know the MAX memory configuration for this? How many slots? Is it just 1x4GB sodimm 200 pin and at what speed? Think I'll pick one up for the wife to carry in her crazy bag, but she needs to have the memory maxed out and win 7 installed.
-
Does anyone here knows the W8 screen brightness? This seems to be the only thing holding me back to replace my 2530p with this. My 52 is too heavy to take it everywhere. If this is not bright enough I may have to wait a sale in the 74 discontinued model (still on sale in the US).
-
The average brightness was around 150 cd/m2 but mostly brighter in the center. I get the feeling the screen isn't all that. Still I broke down and tried to order one. If I get it, it will replace my netbook which will be sold. If I don't get it, oh well, I didn't need it.
-
they seem to be US Army orders that got cancelled but never opened.
they all have a non removeable decal covering up the panny logo. -
Well, just ordered one for fun. Let's see what happens...
Helluva deal if it is real. -
Thinking about getting one too, anyone who has one can comment on it
?
-
Oh man, US shipping only. Tried to order one anyway through a forwarder but seems like they're all spoken for.
Anyway, I still have my W7 but was just thinking it was a real great deal for an upgrade.

Just talked with a rep at ToughOnline.com 866-770-1803
He said they got several thousand orders over the weekend and will need several days to process them all. He said they do have that many units available for sale, although they are close to all sold now. If you got an order ID number in an email after placing an order, you should get an email confirmation from them within 2-3 days. He also confirmed they are an authorized Panasonic dealer and the factory 3 year warranty will be valid.

Thank you for your order of the Panasonic Toughbook model W8. You have selected one of the lightest laptops in the world with a 12.1” display and DVD burner. Before we ship your order, there are a few key things that we must review with you. Please read carefully the following email and follow the instructions to insure that your new Panasonic Toughbook ships as quickly as possible.
1. This W8 that you receive will be new and in original packaging and will carry a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty. Because this model was originally built for a special customer order, the Panasonic logo on the back of the display has been covered by a special adhesive tape per our original customers request. This tape will remain in place on the unit you receive, but in no way will impact your warranty. For warranty support on your Panasonic Toughbook, please call 1-800-LAPTOP5.
2. We ONLY ship to credit card “bill to” addresses, or to addresses that have been registered with your credit card. If you are entering a “ship to” different than your “bill to” your order WILL NOT SHIP until we are able to verify the ship to address has been registered with your credit card company. To speed processing of your order, it is recommended that you ship your W8 to your billing address on your credit card. The Bill to and ship to must be in the 50 United States. Hawaii and Alaska shipping charges will be extra.
3. Because of the nature of this promotion and the fact that the w8 model has been discontinued, these products are non-returnable. All sales are final.
4. This laptop ships with Windows XP installed, but also includes a windows Vista disk which will allow you to upgrade to Windows vista.
5. This laptop ships with 2GB of installed memory. You may upgrade the memory to 4GB of installed memory for $173 at the time of order.
6. This unit includes WiFi wireless connectivity, but does not include WWAN which utilizes carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. You may configure your W8 with a GOBI modem that will allow you purchase an account with the carrier of your choice to obtain Internet connectivity anywhere you have cellular service. The cost for this modem installed is $250.
7. There is no Anti-Virus software included with this W8, nor is there any Microsoft office productivity software. This is available however at the time of purchase at a discounted OEM price. The prices for optional software are: Norton Internet Security 2011 (installed) is $69.99, Microsoft Office Basic is $250 installed.
8. Accidental damage coverage is available for 3 years under our protection plus offering. This cost $250. It is important to note that while manufacturer defects are covered under the warranty, damage to the unit from drops, spills, they would be covered under the protection plus.
NOTE: This promotion is subject to availability, and subject to the intent of the Panasonic Friends and Family promotion. We reserve the right to refuse or cancel any order for any reason.
Please respond the following questions:
1. I understand the W8 is non-returnable and all sales are final.
2. I understand that unless otherwise stated in this email that this w8 will ship as a base configuration including 2GB of installed memory and will NOT include ant-virus software, Microsoft office software, and will only include the base manufacturer warranty for a period of 3 years.
è Type your response here: ______________
If you have questions, or would like to modify your order to include any of the options described above, please respond now to this email. Your Toughbook will ship within 7-14 business days. Please DO NOT call unless you wish to change your order.
Thanks!

I ordered 3 of these for the kids since they can destroy an anvil with a feather duster. Let's see em destroy these like their netbooks.
If panasonic would wake up and put a trackpoint on their machines I'd buy one for myself. -
Yeap, looks like they're still taking orders again although yesterday all orders were on hold.

What I would like to know for the W8, is it 2GB of DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) as stated on ToughOnline or 2GB DDR2-667 standard, expandable to 4GB (PC2-5300) as stated at Panasonic USA Official Panasonic Toughbook W8 Rugged Laptop Computer ?
I have Win7 32-bit installed on my W7 although the sysetm specs says it is 64-ibt capable. -
Windows® 7 Support and Upgrade Information | TOUGHBOOK | Panasonic
Per tech support, no 64 bit drivers. -
bought 3, too bad no touchscreen. so im still gonna get a cf 30 to upgrade my 29 when i find a deal on it.
-
Order # 125916* (I left off last digit but maybe they have not got to me yet) -
They don't want phone calls about the W8 promotion. -
3,000 stolen laptops, $7.4 million estimated value = about $2500/ laptop. Retail on a W8 = $2500.

I understand that a few have successfully installed 64bit Windows 7 using drivers that are on the Japanese version. I was told to let windows hunt the internet for the drivers, and all but 2 drivers should be found. The last 2 are in the Japanese version. I guess we will find out when it comes in. Got the Fedex shipment letter today.
Little concerned if the Bios supports the 64 bit OS. From Intel's website, this is required to install Windows 7 64 bit on a su9300 with GS chipset. But, feeling a little better, since others say it has been done. -
That's a little funny and scary.
Good thing these are coming from a "Panasonic" distributor. -
I misspoke. There are drivers, but no "support." -
I still have not gotten a second confirmation email yet. Ordered Saturday. Anyone else?
-
Dunno who Paul is but got this last night:

and:
"Please do not call requesting status or tracking of your orders.

But they showed pictures of CF-52s & another model not W8s though. But they also said if a deal sounds too good to be true then......

Now that the originals are recovered, the W8s advertised are surplus to the military's needs; hence the cut-price retailing. -

Did they recover them? I did not get that from the story. -
This thread is strangely reminiscent of the "Do you have a tracking number yet" threads on the cell phone forums. We'll be into that and "have you got yours yet?" shortly. We're already into the rumor phase.

Actually this reminds me of a price mistake thread
They pop up every few months, people jump on board to buy a laptop that would normally sell for $1500, and is priced @$200
Some people buy 3 or so ,all excited to maybe squeak by and take advantage of the deal and figure that they will sell the extras to make the already good deal a transaction that the customer gets paid to buy the product
The thread quickly changes from excitement that they bought it , to the stage where they are arguing that the merchant will have to sell it to them as their credit card is showing the charge ,and the mood changes when the early buyers get emails stating their order is canceled
The lowest point is where members are wondering if that darn charge against their credit card if ever going to be reversed lol
However in this case the deal is real, but some will win the Toughbook lottery and others will have to be content with taking there $400 and buying a dell -
Dude, I ain't getting a Dell.

Cap got a cf-29/30 on a price mistake deal a few weeks ago ,so I think he would be in the dog house with the misses if more packages show up at the door
The seller canceled the sale @ the listed price as it was wrong and listed very low, but the seller offered quite a large discount to the buyers as an apology -

She has nothing to say about it! She is quite happy with her upgraded CF-51. She wouldn't notice if I was using a CF-27 one day and a CF-31 the next.

What is THAT about? I work my tail off, earn enough $ to buy something, and I'm gonna take grief from the domestic coordinator/s*x worker/child transportation and disciplinarian unit (AKA wife-piece) about it? Not happening.
