Got some time on my hands. Thinking about installing a NON windows OS on a M-34.
Can anyone point me in the right [read...shortest, least aggravating] direction.
Thanks in advance, Guys and or Gals.

Since the Panasonic Toughbook M34 does not include an optical drive I would suggest attaching an external optical drive to the USB port, and then installing the operating system that way. Ubuntu is one of the easiest and most user-friendly Linux distributions.

Gene,
Read up about this before you do it unless you enjoy aggravation and possibly a lot of tinkering. Not all f the drivers are supported, I don't think. You can check around here to see what works with what. For instance... I lost my touchscreen on my CF-18 when I went to Linux.. -
Yeah, I was just thinkin about it... Prob. just re-load XP at some point.

You could always try out a different O.S. using a Live CD, or something such as VMWare.

That's a good idea... You'd have to do it via USB DVD though... But you couldn't tweak things like it was installed and play around with various drivers to get it to work.
I set up a dual boot a little while back and it gave me fits... But it wasn't the most widely used distro. I have heard of others that work well on a lot of things right out of the box and they continue to update the distro daily it seems like... So you may want to try that. Either that or just set it up on a spare drive and swap it out of the caddy. It only takes a few minutes to swap them. -
By far the easiest OS I've seen to load is puppy LINUX. You can even load it onto a USB drive, boot from that and get UNIX without disturbing your hard drive. Then, if you like it, install it on the hard drive.

Yes but does it allow for full functionality of the hotkeys and touchscreen? I guess we'll find out...

Probably not. It runs x-windows, and on my W7, at least, the keyboard support is minimal.
A painless way to start w/ LINUX, though.
