so i just got the battery for my cf-28 i bought off ebay.

anyway, the battery is completely dead, but thats beside the point. if i run the machine without the battery i runs like a dream, but if i have the batteri in it, it crashes on boot to windows. and if i start it without the battery and put it it when windows is idling it slows down like hell. it gets totally unusable.

the fix is a simple one of course, dont use the bad battery. but what i dont get is what the hell could possibly cause a problem like this?

oh, yeah. even if i remove the battery. it thinks its still in. lamp keeps flashing and xp power meter shows a panasonic battery...

    poltergeist, perhaps?

I remember having a similar problem and the only thing I could work out was that the 28 would not read the new, though completely flat battery.
I ended up buying an external charger and everything worked fine after the first (external) charge.

well, this one isnt new. its just simply dead. its basically a lottery. they've got dozens of untested batteries that they sell. some are good, some are not. but for 5 bucks a pop i took a chance. lost though, but thats beside the point.

a frined of mine has a cf-50. apparently it uses the same battery. i'm gonna try it out in that one and check back. cause i have no bloody clue where i can get my hands on one of those chargers...

You're looking for a CF-VCBTB1 external charger. They will charge a lot of different Toughbook batteries. They, unfortunately, will not charge most after market batteries. They can be found on eBay very cheaply from time to time.
