wlanparts.com used to host the whole setup for this... I like to use Engenous' software as then you can throttle the card... Something I don't think you can do with XP...

Well, while it certainly won't do network analysis from the standpoint of measuring your power output, NetStumbler and for my new favorite inSSIDer will both measure the strength of your AP's signal and the strength of competing AP's in the area and how well you are receiving them. Both programs will also use your GPS to show your location relative to the AP.

Both programs will also tell you what channel that the AP's are on, frankly, usually all on channel 6. Network efficiency can usually be improved by simply using one of the other channels to minimize packet interference.

While as Rick as pointed out, there are drivers available that will let you limit your power by degrees, I have never seen software that would function as a milliwatt meter to measure the strength of your signal output. If someone has something like this I would be interested, but I do not think that it accurately be done without additional hardware.

I tried the Atheros client software on my CF-29 with win7, ant it doesn't work.
The drivers however are loaded natively by win7
So i have now idea of the output power of my engenius card

    Any other experience ???

Tomcat posted some drivers over on Rob's site, I will find the link when I get home and you can try those.

The drivers work fine, that is not the problem.
You can't get the utility working on win7, so it stays in the windows manager, and you can not control the output :( (or shut the radio down)

I have read that the 100mw setting will allow full 600mw output
It's something to do with tricking windows

As Tomcat said, the 8602+s card "lies" to the driver about the power output. This is because most WiFi drivers will limit power output due to regulatory restrictions. For the 8602+s, the power offset is documented to be 5dB for 802.11a (5 GHz) and 9dB for 802.11b/g (2.4GHz).

Also, The setting in the Atheros utility only controls the maximum power output. Actual power output is throttled as part of the 802.11 spec based on the signal to noise ratio reported by the remote end of the connection.
