For first gen blade owners, how long is the battery lasting you? Is it dying yet? Anybody know how many charges it is supposed to last? Also when it does die does anybody know where to get a replacement?

Oh and also my mom wont let me work. :(

Typical battery will last through 500 recharge cycles before it's at 50% capacity. A recharge cycle can be 10 times at 10%, 5 times at 20% or, one time at 100%. Replacement will have to come from Razer.

dim the display to 30-40%, turn off kb lights and dim trackpad, can squeeze in 3+ hours with just office and web browsing. hoping for better battery life with the icy bridge blade.

the new blade should have at least 10-15% better battery life because of Ivy.

what's on the right hand side of the laptop? just the kensington lock port and another vent?

there's no decent unboxing video it seems, even linustechtips looks like some shaky home made video.

I have my Switchblade UI brightness dialed down to the the lowest illumination setting and the keyboard set to the lowest or second to lowest. My screen's at around 40% brightness. I get about 3 hours when just surfing. I actively check to make sure my cooling fans are not running more than at low speed and if they are I look for whatever it is causing the problem.
Mine's not dying. If it were to, you'd have to look to Razer to help with replacement unless you wish to go inside and figure out how to replace the pack yourself.
I held one at PAX Prime. Other than the two USB 2.0 ports now being green to show they're now USB 3.0 and the added "feet" to the casing and the associated vent size increase, it's the same as the original Blade.

Guys, I have couple questions. I pre-ordered last night and now I'm 2nd guessing my self. Can you swap the hard drive with a bigger SSD? Spec says it has 64gb ssd with 500gb hybrid drive. Does that mean you can replace it with two other SSD? I would like to have 256gb ssd as my main and 512gb SSD for storage. Also, is it possible to run two 30inch monitor(2560x1600) on this machine? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

no, you cannot switch hard drives (without voiding the warranty), and I doubt the 660 GTX card in there will be able to handle 2 monitors with that type of resolution.

The Blade is a sealed unit. There are no drive bays accessible without voiding the warranty. There are pictures of the innards of an original Blade on page 8 of this thread. As you can see, the HDD has no casing.

In the second generation Blade, there's an mSATA SSD for cache and a conventional 2.5" 500GB HDD.
You could probably do it if you don't mind voiding the warranty.
There's only one video out. It's HDMI. While technically HDMI could support 2560x1600, it's unlikely you're going to find a device that accepts that resolution via an HDMI port. It's also unlikely the Blade's HDMI port is spec'ed for that resolution.

Hey guys I just pre-ordered my blade and im pretty excited. Ill probably be playing guildwars 2, assassins creed 3, and block ops 2 zombies on it... CANT WAIT. oh and if battery life becomes an issue ill probably just get the energizer xp18000 which is a pretty dang small battery pack and should add a couple of hours of battery life to the blade.

Gaming? No, it's a 66.5 wHr battery pack measured at 19v, 3.5A. The Blade is a 19v, 6.32A device. Gaming, you might get an extra 20 minutes.

My XP18000 is from 2010. None of the tips that came with it are compatible, so you'll have to order one from Energizer. I just put in an order tonight. Probably take a few days to get a response.

Tom's Hardware did an external battery pack roundup in March, 2011. Back then, the Electrovaya PowerPad 130 seemed to be the best balance between runtime and weight.

To the owners of the current model,

How do you rate the rigidness of this laptop? I know there have been some reviews and the fit and finish has been reported as excellent. I was wondering how the laptop has survived being used as a laptop?

The reason I'm asking is that my current luggable "gaming laptop" never leaves my desk. It is in fact a desktop replacement. I imagine that if I get a Blade, I'll be banging it around more and it will need to stand up more to bumps and bruises than my Asus G75 which seems kind of fragile with its plastic hull.

    Thanks for your help,
    Frank

It's solid. There's a little wiggle around the hinge from time to time, but no flex.

Mine's a bit marked up on the corners. It's been known to rub against a stainless steel thermos a little so that may be why.

It's been going back and forth to work every day in a King Single along with a Canon 7D and various lenses in a large Haven in the front compartment. I lean against the backpack for around 20-30 minutes during the commute. This has been going on since April. It's also gone cross-country in a D-Lux Laptop Messenger (part by train, part by plane) and to Boston in a large Skivvy. No issues.

Switchable graphics allow most gaming laptops to run for a few hours on their internal batteries, but when gaming the battery is little more than a UPS.

Energizer/XPAL turned down my tip request. The 6.32A of the Razer Blade is too much for the XP18000's 3.5A output to handle.

I've sent a note to ElectroVaya asking if the PowerPad 130 will work and if it has a compatible tip.

Me too :( I have to go out of town on the 5th of October and wanted the laptop by then. (For some reason I choose the 5-7 day shipping ) I am tying to talk to the store support to see if they can change it but it does not sound like it.

    hey all,

ive been following this thread since inception and thought id pop in and say hi. after a day and a half of annoyance trying to pre-order, in which i threw a virtual fit like a little kid (yes i am slightly ashamed about that), my pre-order went through on the new blade. the clincher for me was seeing the v1 at frys and getting to play around with it. i already knew how the switchblade ui worked as i have the swtor keyboard and its pretty cool for what it does, but on the laptop it looks even cooler, and the blade itself is one sexy beast. my second choice (well actually they were both my first choice, and i pretty much did an actual coin toss to decide between the two) was a moderately decked out msi gt70-0ne with upgraded proc, screen coming in at around 3200 bux, but with free shipping and no tax. so im pretty excited to receive the blade, and after talking to a rep on the phone who called me (because of the aforementioned fit) told me they would be shipping sunday/monday and i should get it by friday.

so yeah. any of you guys/girls have backup laptops you were looking at before ordering the blade?

Congrats John, i just got mine with a confirmation by eod of wed via UPS as well. quick question for you seeing as you own the original and did a fabulous write up early on in this thread. i know taking off the bottom voids warranty, but is there any kind of a seal or anything to indicate that the bottom was removed?

Just hope there is a watered down version of this laptop. I need a 17" that's thin and lightweight but i dont need it for gaming purposes. razer did it, just that the parts are too powerful for general use.

i may ask razer support if they would be willing to revisit this warranty policy. i think the primary reason they have the void warranty warning is for people tampering with the switchblade from the bottom. i think if they put some stickers on the switchblade inside and whatever components they don't want messed with, the hdd would be an easy swap. it was extremely easy with the original blade. but again, they can tell if you opened it.

Hopefully the generation after this provides as big a boost as this one did compared to the last. Not asking to a 780, but a 770 sure would be a doozy...

also, I hope they add bigfoot killer wireless to the next one.

I got my tracking as well. Ordered Samsung 830 512gb on amazon with fastest shipping to match it on Tuesday. I will be installing the ssd the very same day I receive my blade. This will be my first open heart surgery performed on a laptop. If u guys have any tips please post. Im sure others are interested as well. I'm also debating if I should do a clean windows 7 install or a hard drive copy with norton ghost.

funny, i did the same thing, however, i am not 100% if i want to risk tearing open a brand new lappy or not. i had done quite a bit of modding with my old msi laptop however it wasnt nearly as closed as i assume the blade is. for me, if i do end up swapping out the hd for the ssd, i would do a clone disk as i hate having to track down things like the caching software or drivers and such when i dont need to.

To anyone who has the blade, is it weird to use the trackpad to the right and how is the keyboard? Is it hard to use since its not like a traditional laptop? Also if you turn of the switchblade ui to conserve battery, does the mouse function still work?

I dont own the first blade (and second isnt coming for another 3 days) but I own the star wars keyboard which also has the UI so i assume they work similarly. Im not sure you can disable the UI all together, I havnt seen an option in synapse to disable it, and i assume synapse also controls the ui in the blade as well. However, when i first got my swtor keyboard synapse was crashing an awful lot in the beginning, and when i force quit it, the track pad still worked (on my desktop its recognized as a synaptics touchpad device - windows 7 64bit) so at least that is usable if you were to force quit synapse, or if it crashed even. hope that helps.
