So after a week or so of deliberation to myself and then ultimately joining the forums just to ask a couple of questions; I have finally made a purchase! With heated feuding from individual members here at the forums, I have come t the conclusion to deviate from my original choice and instead by the P870KM1 for HIDevolution! My initial choices were either the MSI GT73VR 7RF TITAN PRO-425 or P775DM3-G. I guess I deviated to something much larger and fancy I suppose!

I will be installing an extra 2.5" SSD myself once I receive the laptop since it's coming from my old Thinkpad; a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB. I will be installing Windows 10 Pro myself since I already have a license key on-hand and prefer to setup things myself (I'll download drivers ahead of time). Other than that, I'm super excited to replace my aging six-year-old desktop I built oh so long ago! I can't wait for this behemoth to arrive so portability can finally be a thing for me! Already got a nifty laptop raring to go!

I would like to thank @Donald@HIDevolution for the excellent support and question answering over the phone for about 30 minutes and back and forth email. Kudos to @Phoenix, @Papusan, @Mr. Fox, @Galm @Midas Touch, and @iunlock for all the forum posts and civil back and forth discussion which helped me with my decision!

Feel free to ask me any questions and give me any useful information to prepare for what's to come!

Ah, crap... Just realized I messed up the title. Any way to fix it?
And yes! He made me feel rather comfortable my purchase, despite I knowing what exactly I wanted. HE reassured me that everything looked crystal clear. He also bumped me to a better PCIe SSD for a few extra bucks more, didn't even realize the difference until he pointed it out.

PM a mod (maybe @Charles P. Jefferies) what you want the title to be. And yeah, very rarely do I speak with a company rep who actually knows what they're talking about. Donald is on a very small list of those who really do.

@ZehTy A nice socket monster should perhaps have a friend as well :D PAPUSAN's U3 MOD
@Q937 @Mr. Fox +++ have similar U3 mod. Not needed but still nice to have. Buy or make your own fan filters as I, and you will almost never need cleaning inside your machine. Just clean the filters regularly :)

Yes, indeed. Excellent suggestion, including the filters. And, I just ordered some new monster EK Furious Vardar FF5 high performance fans for this one. I should have them by the end of the week.

What I suggested for you, is the best Notebook cooler out there(Perfekt for modding). Now you know what to buy later. No need for searching other options. Maybe outside the cooler below :D

Brother @Papusan suggestion on the filters should not be taken lightly. It makes a huge difference on how clean the inside of the laptop remains when the air being brought into it has all of the lint, dust and other debris filtered out. When I first started using filters I was amazed at the difference. I went from cleaning out the fans and heat sink radiators every month to only needing to do that a couple of times a year.

Are there any recommendations where I can get a cooling pad/air filter that's not a DIY and something that is already designed for it that I can get from somewhere like Amazon or Newegg?

Anything other that a U3 cooler is a waste of money. You can use it stock until you can afford to mod it later. Absolutely nothing does a fantastic job stock. If you do not wish to do the mod ever, then don't waste money on a cooler. Just prop up the back of the laptop to give it room to breathe underneath and that will be as effective (or even more so) than most any stock laptop cooler. Using something as simple as a 1 x 1-inch strip of wood the width of the laptop placed under the rear rubber feet will work as well as most coolers, or better than most.

Same here @Mr. Fox I bought my Clevo P870 in February last year(over a year now). I have cleaned the fans and heatsink 1 or maybe max 2 times as long as I've had the machine (But I open and see if everything is ok as normal, but that's all - No need for cleaning). I have dogs and cats, but the filter stop most of the dust from being sucked into. Easy vacuuming the filter and the fans a few times a week. Aka a couple of minutes a week and all is good. Worth every dime.

I just cleaned out my desktop the other night and my God, I let it get so dusty I was coughing up dust bunnies by the time I was done.

I would think that of course, laptops are easier to maintain and clean compared to a desktop. If you have cleaned it that many times without much issue, then I'm not too worried in the long run.

All depends if you have a Apple similar thin Trash-book or laptops with easy access to hardware like the Clevo socket beasts. Some must be completely dismantled before you can start the cleaning of fan-heatsink :p

I popped open my Thinkpad T450s yesterday night and it had very thin dust residue. Selling it to a co-worker since I don't need it anymore and I had to snag the SSD out of it! It was rather clean and those things are quite thin too. I'm okay with cracking open my new Clevo though. I just don't want to do it too often!

I removed the screws to the bottom cover and the keyboard retention screw and set them aside. I made myself two small clear tape handles to lift the keyboard off the magnets. I don't need to use anything except my hands to gain access to the area under the bottom cover or under the keyboard. The bottom cover snaps in place very securely and the magnets hold the keyboard firmly in place, so the screws are merely a nuisance.

Congratulations on your new laptop ! Welcome to the P870KM1 family :)

Opening up and cleaning inside the laptop every month seems like an overkill unless you live in a desert or something. Just buy a can of compressed air and blow the vents out once in a while. It should keep clean. Besides if the fans are very dirty, you will know it by the increased sound and heat, you don't need to open the laptop to know that.

Since your CPU is already delidded and undervolted, the temps should be fine and wouldn't require any additional cooling, especially for a single 1080 as long as the ambient temps are not too hot in which case you will also be hot.

    Enjoy ! :)

Oh yeah, I've bee using this thing for years on my desktop and it gets the job done. I'm sure it'll serve me well if I ever need to vacuum out my new Clevo! I don't live in a super dry and hot climate but, it does get very humid here at times which can be excruciating.

yeah these CPUs are run like a hot lava cake without delidding to be honest. I wonder how anyone else gets a system to pass stress test with decent temps with a non delidded CPU even at stock speeds

I've been doing so research and I was wondering if there is any possible way if I should upgrade to GTX 1080 SLI? I do have a 3K Monitor @144Hz which I use everyday and I do want to get the best investment possible. Is it worth the huge price bump if I can still change my config? Will the games be powered well enough with the 3K 120Hz built-in screen on the laptop as well?

    Any thoughts @Phoenix @Papusan @Mr. Fox @D2 Ultima @Galm

    If I had a P870DM3, I would, and that's the config I had which I sold to @bloodhawk

If I buy a laptop, I max out the specs, every time, and not think about it later or have any regrets...

It'll be fine for most games, a 1070 can run 1440p 120Hz decently. 1080 is better, sli would just slaughter it. Depends how much you care about true ultra and what kinds of games you play.

    It's a huge cost premium.

@Phoenix it should be be rich... be like Phoenix lol.

You can upgrade. I don't know if it's worth it to you. If you have the money and can do it, then by all means. I wouldn't take the single GPU without the vapor chamber either, for what it's worth. If you're playing new games and want the best graphics at 1440p 120Hz/144Hz, then 1080N SLI is what you want (BF1, Shadow Warrior 2, etc)

Know that it's a SERIOUS beast to cool, though. Make sure HID will give you the optimized thermal pad placement and ask if they'll run a shim and CLU between your IHS and your Heatsink on your CPU. I can guarantee you'll need it.

It's a matter of cost now and going over budget to make the machine last longer, I feel like I still have some time before my order fully processes but I just don't know without gathering much input which from the looks of the forums here, there isn't much.

I run a single GTX 980 on my desktop I own now. I certainly underestimated just how much power that monitor needs when I first bought the GPU and monitor at the time. It certainly pushes my 980 to the limit and I could never max out any settings and would dip below 60 FPS quite frequently. Graphically intensive fights in WoW dip below 30 FPS and even 20 FPS a lot of the time too.

I run most of my games fine with a single 1070. Though admittedly most of the time I'm using it with my desktop which is 980 Ti sli. With that I rarely get drops in the games I play. Or at least drops below like 110.

let me make your life easier although this may not ensure the same benefit in actual gaming according to how a game scales with SLI

So in a real world scenario, is it truly worth the price premium difference? I'm not exactly a benchmarker and only want very smooth and stable performance in game 100% of the time for years to come.

Well SLI support for games isn't that great but for games that do support SLI well it's awesome. Also no SLI means no Micro stuttering so there is a plus point to each. SLI would shine once games become more demanding but a single 1080 GTX will handle any game at max settings right now

As Phoenix said, a single GTX 1080 can handle all current games at max at your monitor's 3K resolution easily. These beasts were made for 4K and VR. I have a P870KM1 in SLI, but my SLI is almost always disabled for what I use the machine for.

Note: Whether you will need SLI in the future or not depends on what kind of games you play, not all games are so demanding and not all games are designed to use SLI. Also with a GTX 1080, I would say you are already quite future proof.

Also note, with 2x GTX 1080 the laptop does run hot (no throttling, at least in my use-case so far, but still very hot)

That's the thing, I think I can squeeze the extra cash and the heat would not be an issue to with with the Vapor Chamber i'm sure. I just want to run max settings and keep gaming at an even pace for years to come. I had to upgrade my GTX 570 to a 980 midway through my desktops life-cycle because of the ROG Swift monitor I bought. I didn't really know what I was getting into when I bought that monitor by my God is it beautiful.

I run games and videos at the same time frequently and the amount of lag and stuttering I get nowadays is unbearable. I'm trying to think that SLI can not only benefit the games that it supports but multimedia consumption and and multitasking as well. I would love to connect my new laptop to my 4K TV as well from time-to-time and with a single 1080, I don't think that would work as well.

    At max load during benchmarks:

    SLI enabled
    CPU - 92
    GPU - 85

    SLI disabled
    CPU - 85
    GPU - 66

As mentioned, these are temps during extreme benchmarks. During normal gaming and every day loads, it shouldn't get so hot.

Got in contact with @Donald@HIDevolution and the update to the order has been made! Getting me some SLI GTX 1080 goodness! I guess I'm stuck with this thing for five years just like my old desktop here!

It's almost like treating the laptop as a lease? Interesting concept. Your post only scratches the surface though. Truly curious how this works though.
