If it goes away after you disconnect and reconnect, it sounds like a HDMI handshake issue. Its very difficult to say that its 100% a hardware problem, mainly because there are 3 parts needed for the handshake.
1. The host needs to send a signal.
2. The signal needs to traverse through the cable to the client.
3. The client needs to respond with an appropriate response.
Failure among any of these 3 points can cause the issue. Could be a bad cable, could be bad software, could be hardware that doesn't fully comply to the HDMI standard, or it could be firmware or hardware failures. You'll be surprised at how many monitors and TVs that's currently on the market that doesn't comply fully to the HDMI standard. Give it some time, Mythlogic guys are very reasonable people, you just gotta give them the benefit of the doubt.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Yea, the thing is I've tried multiple screens and different types of wires. My gf has been using the first monitor with her desktop, connected by DVI-D and it's been perfect! That is why I am leaning more towards it being a hardware issue. I mean, I tried different HDMI cables(from crappy ones to blue jeans cable), I've also tried HDMI to DVI-D(blue jeans cable).
Right now, Mythlogic is telling me to try a mini dp port, I will keep this thread updated and let you all know how it goes. -
Well, that's not an unreasonable assumption based on what you've tried. But it still looks like a handshake issue if it works with a simple connect/disconnect, because HDMI is digital and if you have a bum HDMI port, it is either massively pixelated or it doesn't work at all. Oh, while I'm at it, I'll also tell you that with HDMI or any digital interface, there is no need to buy nice cables. The signal either gets there or it doesn't, cables from Amazon or MonoPrice does the job perfectly fine without the extra cost.
Have you inspected the HDMI port itself? Sometimes there could be dust, hair or even bugs that gunk up the works that can cause this type of issue. In some instances, it could also be a damaged connector like Sony's initial batch of PS4s. But I would definitely take a look at the port.bloodhawk likes this. -
Yes, I've checked it, it's a brand new laptop, no dust or nothing. Also, with the second monitor I'm using(HDMI to DVI-D) the issue is better, but not completely fixed. With the first monitor, I thought it might be the HDMI port on the monitor itself, but when I tried the HDMI to DVI-D, the problem became worse!!! I also agree about the wires, I just prefer BJC, but I have other brands as well to test in situations like this.
Right now, my gf's desktop is connected to the first monitor(DVI-D to DVI-D) and it's perfect. I appreciate the feedback though. At this point, even if using the mini dp port works with my first monitor, that doesn't fix the HDMI issue. Which means, if I ever sell this laptop, I will have to state the HDMI port on this laptop is broken/defective/etc. That sucks.Last edited: Jun 18, 2016 -
