PWNPCs

Just a quick post on my experience with PWNPCs.

Firstly, I chose PWNPCs over PCSpecialist and MySn because they are active on these boards and very friendly in their emails. Website is easy to use and don't try to sell you anything you don't need. All laptops come with FREE Arctic Silver and Custom BIOS. Plus standard shipping (at the time) was 4 working days. Nobody could beat that without paying an extra £70.

Ordered a P150SM on Monday, Arrived on Friday morning.

Spoke to Scott and he was first class from start to finish. He was very accommodating when I needed to make two different payments from two accounts.
He answered emails on holiday or wherever he was pretty much straight away, can't fault him or PWNPCs.

Great Laptop, Great Service, Great Company.

Will not hesitate with buying my future laptop with them.

 

Great to hear feedback from forum members. Reading few feedbacks about pwnpcs got me contacting them and I'm hoping to order from them, when I get the answer.

Did you order inside UK? Or did they deliver outside the UK? As I'm ordering from Finland so would like to hear how delivering outside the UK has worked out.

Configuation page is sooooooooooo slow, is it always like this? Takes 15 seconds to update.

Can you help with questions, they have no phone lines?

How do they offer 2 HDD options, I thought the laptop has 1x 9.5mm bay.

What mSATA do they use? Just says 30GB mSATA, 60GB mSATA - no name. Also what Memory do they use, like mSATA no name.

Why is 8970M so much, 770M base +£235 for 780M, +£270 for 8970M?

Why non UK backlit keyboard 45£ more cost, same keyboard different letters no?

Yeah, the configuration page is kind of slow. Just remeber to update one at a time and wait for it to configur, or else if you try 2 at a time, only one will stick. Otherwise, the configurator works okay.

I think the P150SM can hold up to 3HDD, 1x 2.5inch and 2x mSata. Not sure if you need to use the optical drive bay for second 2.5inch hdd though.

I don't know what is their "base" msata drive, but they can hook you up what ever drive you want, I believe. I ordered an SSD that they didn't have in the configuration page and no problem. They added it to the order when I asked.

Pricing again I believe is much based on the manufacturers prices, though ofcourse every reseller has their own prices. But GTX780m and 8970M being the most powerfull options and the 8970m newest/less available, prices are higher as expected.

With the keyboards I think it's just that they order the UK- version more, so they have better price for it and the others sell less, so price is ofcourse a tad higher.

But I made quite a lot of price comparison and PWNPCs is the same price as the other EU- companies, even a bit cheaper with certain configurations. This coming ofcourse from euro-> pound money conversion, so rates may change and the price a bitt with it. But at the moment, they are really competitively priced.

Same setup in mySN, was about 90 euros more expensive, including the shipping. And I suggest to check PWNPCs facebook- page.

Scott from PWNPCs was really helpfull and friendly in his emails when I contacted them, so if you have anything you would like to add to the configuration, I'm sure they will help you!

I'm waiting for the laptop to arrive after they get it assembled. I will give my feedback again after that But so far so good!

 

Forgot about the contact information, I believe they have phone number in their company information. But they respond to emails and contact form quite fast.

 

Jokeri answered most of your questions but I wanted to share my thoughts as well.

About configuration page - yes, update is so slow that it gets annoying, takes about 20s for me.

About HDDs I'm not sure myself. For example with P150EM you get second HDD only if you select optical bay caddy instead of DVD drive, but for newer P150SM you can get 2 HDDs and DVD drive if I understand correctly.

About GPU pricing - yes, it's weird to me as well that 8970M costs more than almighty 780M. One other reseller offers upgrade to 8970M a lot cheaper (though upgrade price for different size models differs - weird, right?).

I don't manage to come around here as much as I used too but it really is great to come here and see some kind words!

Just so you all know I've just dropped the 8970m price a lot. I believe it was artificially high at the manufacturer to keep initial demand low, wouldn't want a repeat of the 7970M launch! As it's said here, I follow suppliers and manufacturers prices quite closely, if it was up to me you'd have everything for free but alas that can't happen!

Jokeris right, I generally can hook you up with whatever you want if you ask. I'll do my best to get whatever you want as long as A) my price covers it, and B) I can actually get it! I tend to stick to Kingston and Intel stuff on the site as going through and adding every possible option and keeping them current would be near impossible and I really do trust both the Intel and Kingston products.

RAM is either Kingston Hyper-X or Samsung though I tend to be putting more Hyper-X stuff in. Again just email me or leave a comment on the order and I'll try sort you what you want.

Again, thanks for the kind words, and thanks for supporting the little guys. We simply can't compete on price as we don't have the buying power of the bigger guys so that's why we really, really try to go the extra mile and give you the best service and extras we can!

The 8970M was always only ever a little more than the 770M from everybody, no high artificial price and never higher price than the 780M apart from your website - but your price is now about in line with everyone else

Jokeri - as I am in the UK I have not looked at mysn eu prices, only mysn uk which is better for me than pwn pcs pricing. Plus they have full Europe wide warranty for when I move around, but warranty is not main and only concern for me.

If Pwn can get what parts I want, great. But it seems that they do not hold stock, or they would know what they would supply, so default parts are what the laptop company they buy from supplies. Maybe I am wrong. Flexability and feedback on here gives me confidence, but other things like mobile phone number hiden away on wrong web page make me think of EBay seller who works from home.

I have a choice to make, so will update when my mind is made up.....

 

It's the same with all Clevo seller, they get the barebones and fit them with the parts of your choice.
The only real unknown is the screen as Clevo tend to exchange the models they use every now and then. so what holds true for one batch may not be the case for the next. So they may be able to tell you exactly what you get once they know your place in line, but if you haven't ordered yet they may have to wait for the next batch to show up until they can confirm the details.

That being said, placed my order yesterday at PWNPCS >>> Prema joins the W230ST club soon! So get ready for more BIOS LOVE

 

If it weren't a legal requirement I wouldn't have it there at all! Do you really want your mobile number on the internet?! If you've got questions don't hesitate to email me and I'll get you answers as promptly as I can! I know a lot about laptops but not everything so I do have to spend a bit of time researching from time to time hence email being a lot easier!

 

My new w230st is due to arrive from pwn on Monday, very excited! I'll put it through some stress testing to check out the temps. Not sure I can do a big long tips post like I did for my sony s13p though.

By the way, Scott or Prema, will my laptop include the Prema bios mod, or not yet? I assume I can flash upgrade it when it's ready?

The laptop arrived today, P150SM, pretty fast delivery, only the weekend seemed to slow the delivery by couple of days, never used DPD before.

Everything looking great, installed windows 7, works great and installed windows 8 pro. Seems to be working also pretty fast. With windows 7 I had to install drivers manually and the ethernet- driver didn't want to get recognized, so in that department, Windows 8 is the better choice as Clevo doesn't offer native Windows 7 drivers, but luckily most of the windows 8 drivers work on windows 7.

Built quality seems good so far and the testing- document from PWNPCS that came with the laptop was a nice touch, makes me feel that the boys in pwn really give real attention to all their customers with individual testing and quality control.

Something that seemed somewhat worrysome at first, was the delivery package. The laptop came with it's own cartbox, which is well cushioned and protected, but I would think that overseas delivery might need some extra protection, like and extra cartbox with cushioning over the laptops box. But the box came in good condition so maybe PWNPC has had good experiences with the original box on its own, so no problem there, just something I did not expect.

All in all, I'm pretty excited for the new laptop and pwnpcs gave good customer service! Let's hope that htere isn't any problems but if there is, I'm sure pwnpcs will give me the best possible support.
