Can someone steer me to information about how to record music played on laptop.

Checking the sound devices, I see only two offered:
    Microphone
Line in (which is inactive unless something is connected)

If I record on `microphone' (which is built in). Of course I get lots of racket if anything is going on near the laptop. It seams like a terrible way to record sounds coming from the laptop

Is there no device that is directly linked to outbound sounds

I'm a knothead about sound... not very well informed at all. Maybe someone can explain to me how to make clean recording (not over the builtin mic) when the sound is coming from a dvd or online.
