    Hi Folks,

I did a repaste a few hours ago on my laptop as the temps were regularly high and the fans were either constantly on or ramps up pretty quickly.

The pictures below shows what I found out after cleaning.

Basically the CPU and GPU dies seem to be scratched on a corner, which has me worried.

I'm using cooler master mastergel pro. I believe ICDiamond was used before.

My questions would be, is my CPU/GPU OK? And should i do anything to rectify this? And finally, did I use enough thermal paste?

    -------

    Before repaste:
Thermals would shoot to 90c+ very quickly and the AIDA64 showed instant thermal throttling.
Idling was in the 60C range IIRC.

    After repaste:
Thermals takes slightly longer to normalise, as well as hovering around 70-75C range.
    Idles on 40-43C range.

Did you clean the fans out the p65/67 fans can get caked on the inside its not normally visible

repaste thermals seems fine for a 15 inch model seems alright for idle range

ICD can cause the small scratches after it's removed (Metabox do use ICD by default, so it had probably hardened somewhat by now). It's no big deal though.

Your temps seem fine so I wouldn't worry and if you haven't done so already, look into an undervolt+overclock on your 7820HK. The HK models are highly overvolted out of the factory.

Yes, cleaned the fans as well. Didn't have compressed air so used a portable leaf blower :D

Thanks Stooj. Yeah ICD was hard, especially the overflow bits. CPU was easy to clean but the GPU there's still residue from ICD on the small caps around the die.

I did an undervolt of -125mv and disabled turbo and dropped the base clocks to 2.6Ghz. Now the temps are hovering on 45-50C with external monitor plugged in. Fans are running quietly compared the 70-80% speed from before.

You shouldn't have to disable turbo at all. If you're using Throttlestop play around with the Speed Shift EPP setting. A higher setting means the CPU will more readily clock down when unused.

Running at 2.6ghz base and turbo disabled is actually not as efficient as you'd think, as you can often prevent the CPU from downclocking further.

For reference, my rig (P650RP6-G with 6820HK) spends all day with the following profile:
    • 36 multiplier on all cores (technically an all-core OC for this cpu)
    • Speed Shift EPP = 96
    • -148mv undervolt
Idle/Desktop temps are around 45-50C (22C ambient in the office), full load jumps to ~70-75C. I need to re-paste as core 0 gets ~5C hotter than all the others under load. Especially since I should be able to dial it up to 4.0ghz, temps permitting.

Most of the time it floats around 3.1-3.3ghz on the desktop, <10W PKG power which is great.

Paste is a bit much but nothing to be worried about.

Not at all. Vents were actually clear. I regularly clean the vents and hadn't seen it clogged up at all.
