I've owned this NP8258 model with Windows 7 for at least three years now. It's now undergoing the aging process of slowdown with only passable processing for most high quality applications, despite using a cleanup and deleting/transferring files I don't use anymore. This laptop has been in need for an upgrade a while ago, anyway. I want to think that some hardware upgrades have to cater specifically to certain brands unless told otherwise, which is why I'm here. Here are the full specs of the Sager since purchased:

    • Intel i7-4710MQ CPU
    • 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM one piece
    • Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU
    • Crucial M5 120 GB m-SATA drive
    • 750 GB 7200rpm hard drive
    • Realtek wireless + Bluetooth combo adapter.
    • Build in webcam
    • Build in Fingerprint scanner
    • 15.6” FHD matte LCD screen.
    • 8X DVD-ROM drive
    • 2 cooling fans with a Diamond therm-something paste that absorbs the heat, I think.

I would like for some recommendations that can help upgrade the laptop. Just the idea of what to get is fine too, not to cheap and not too expensive.

Most computer components don't tire out/slow down. Age tends to have bigger impacts, but that's not to say it isn't time to treat yourself and your 'puter.

Probably fine, but a 4910MQ would be a nice little bump in performance. You could go with an 4940MX even, if you want to shell out that much $$.

Recommended you install at least one more 8GB module to get dual channel operation. This will yield a noticeable performance difference.

If you game, research your options for an upgrade (avoid the 8xxM series). Even a 960M would be nice and not terribly expensive.

SSDs drives have come down in cost. Crucial is decent. Maybe look into an Intel or Samsung drive in larger capacities, or just go with a big 2.5" SSD to replace both current drives.

You can upgrade this if you want to go through the trouble of searching out a compatible upgrade, or just hook up a nice external monitor if you're not mobile with the system.

Lol yes, it helps dissipate heat. You can't do anything for the fans (other than clean them), and IC Diamond is a good paste. If you replace the CPU and GPU, you can use it again or go with another compound (recommended non-conductive if you're not experienced with pasting, unless you have someone with experience do the application for you).

If you could pick up a cheap 970M along with the prema mod bios (with a beer money donation) would let you revamp that machine for not too much.

970M/980M would be a good upgrade along with another piece of 8GB DDR3 RAM...

Back again. I notice the series of ram come in different varieties. Any recommendations? I don't want to feel as though I picked an incompatible DDR3 1600mhz ram.
