Hey there,
Recently, all Clevo W110ER came with matte screens. I wanted the glossy one, but they stopped making it when I bought it.
THIS MATTE SCREEN IS TOTALLY HORRIBLE mine is made by: InfoVision Optoelectronics Co., Ltd).
It's not the screen it self, it's the matte cover, because there are grains with colors everywhere. And it's just the matte cover, because even with screen off, and with a flashlight aiming at the screen, the grains are still there in the last matte cover of the screen.
This is the kind of grain I'm talking about:
![]()
(this is not my screen. It's a friend's clevo W370ET screen as an example. It more models lately are bringing those FREAKIN BAD MATTE COVERS).
Other example:
![]()
(example from internet)
My questions are:
-> Does Clevo sell just the outside gloss of the screen so I can exchange my matte cover to glossy cover?;
-> Is Clevo now selling glossy screens again? (if yes, how much does it cost?);
-> If I polish the matte screen cover, would I get rid of the grains and will the screen kinda get a little glossy???

This laptop is still available with the Glossy screen as the default at Mythlogic MYTHLOGIC :: Configure Your System you actually have to pay extra to get the Matte from them.
Other then that the Matte coating is built onto the LCD screen when it is produced and is not a separate layer that can be removed. I've never heard of someone successfully removing the Matte coating from a screen that had it adhered at the factory. The two attempts I've heard of have both resulted in a screen in even worse condition as they couldn't sand fine enough by hand to not mar the under surface and leaving streaking or kill some of the pixels as the over-coating is VERY thin on modern LCDs to reduce light loss.
If you purchased from somewhere that wouldn't offer the glossy screen and charge a large refund fee you may be better off talking to Mythlogic about what model number glossy fits and is compatible with the LVDS connector. Most of the good 11.6 screens use the newer eDP connector so you have to be careful about which one you order. From what I recall from when HTwingnut was looking to replace his the cost varies from $75 to $120 for a replacement glossy LCD panel. -
Thanks for the info!!!!
I will certainly have them in mind for the future if I really want to change the whole screen.
But about the screen, I wonder if polishing will not stop this grain and make the surface to look like glossy.
And still I already opened a few LCD's and I believe I could remove the glass on them, I separated the whole screen into various layers that looks like plastic sheets, and I mounted it all so it looked like a screen, and the screen was undamaged... (I can't is to remember if the GLASS was glued to the first layer of the screen or not. When I have time, I will go into my friend's home so I can check this again).
This is what I'm talking about disassemble the screen:
(I already did this to other laptop and without damaging)
Other more pratical example:
(though this is a mobile phone lcd, in this example he actually could separate the glass).
I also seen a guy that made something crazy with his screen, like a projector transparent Box for his store. He removed all the transparent layers from the lcd and glued them in a glass, and it looks like a TRANSPARENT WINDOW SCREEN (Though he claimed he broke one or two LCD's first to achieve that).
Thanks for reply!Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
If you want to proceed down that path I just ask you take lots of pictures to document everything so others can learn from the result (either one). HTwingnut has some pictures from when he replaced his screen and if I remember correctly he found that it was all fused together. You may want to look up his review of the w110er and find the pictures and posts where he talks about it.
-
Damnit, if it's all fused together, then I wouldn't even bother my self opening the screen. Some screens seem to be removable, other seem to be fused together (I just opened a nokia that i had with the broken screen, but that one was all fused, the glass is like melt and all fused together).
But still if I could separate the crap matte cover, I would still need the glossy protective plastic.
I have just seen one dell screen which was matte, and in fact was actually just a Glossy screen, with a very, very HARD matte coating glued, and with a few strength the guy removed it and made it a glossy screen, hummm...
Still I don't think the laptop's screen will be just a sticker above the screen
EDIT: I opened the outside of the laptop screen. It looks to me like this screen has some kind of sticker in it too. But I'm just scared to try to remove it damn. Almost made a deep scratch on the screen, by luck it didn't exit the outter black margin of the screen. But it definitely has something like a very thin sticker in it, but its so hard to even try to pull. (But there's definitely like a 0,3mm something above the screen that doesn't even extend to the whole outter margin of the screen. It just goes until it's hidden by the screen cover of the laptop plastic).
ps: Thanks for the info. I will try to find that replacement!
Keep Cool -
Yeah, it's all enclosed, no way to remove just the glass without destroying the screen.
-
But hey, that's most of the glossy screens which have like a glass...
But it may work with a sticker too on this screen, that's probably why it's full of grain.
Look at what this guy removed from a DELL screen:
This is not the matte stickers we buy to glue to the screen.
That actually was inside the screen that a guy disassembled from factory. He said he tried every scratch fix on the screen to remove scratches, but nothing worked. So he removed the MATTE coating, and the screen looks kinda GLOSSY after removing it.
But he claims that it was hard to pill off since u have to make a lot of strength and could break the screen.
His removal:
( WATCH THE VIDEO. Jesus,it seems it needs WET papper too above screen, too scary to try. BTW the video is from other guy).
It looks to me like W110ER screen also has some kind of s.h.i.t.t.y GARBAGE coating full of grain like that screen.
This is my screen:
( ██ = exterior part of the full screen ---||--- ██ = Line where it has definitely something above screen)
(Original pic where you can see where it seems to also start something like a anti-glare sticker above screen).
Sorry for the quality of the pics, they were taken with nokia... Also I'm too scared to try to remove it. As you can probably see in the picture I already made a deep scratch on the corner, and gratefully didn't went to a visible part of the screen, or I would be SCREWED.
ps: If anyone ever made this, or make this into any laptop matte screen, please send me a private message with the results! Oh and if I actually had money, I would on this crap screen and do it, because if it scratched I would just simply buy a Glossy screen. But jeez, someday I will try this in my old LG LCD...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hehe
I JUST did this to my LG. DAMN IT, IT LOOKS LIKE A DAMN MIRROR. HELL YEAH
It actually worked on my LG screen (VERY SURPRISED)
THIS IS A TRUE NORMAL MATTE SCREEN FROM LG 19INCH (Normal LCD, not LED backlight)
(Normal matte screen display)
(Finally I can have a glossy screen hehe).
(removed cover)
(And pic of my clevo).
But still the laptop looks like a billion times harder, and I don't think I will have "balls" to do it (but still I wish to have a glossy screen).
The topic works as a reference now, if you wanna convert your old home matte screens into high glossy
ps: JESUS CHRIST, I think my LG LED TV will be the next one

I don't think a matte screen just puts a sticker on it unless it was a protective sticker that they forgot to take off at the factory. Not sure why you'd use water instead of alcohol. Alcohol removes most adhesives without much issue, not to mention that it dries quickly and less likely to cause any permanent damage than water. Distilled water would be best because there's no minerals to contaminate any electronics should it come in contact with it. Also I believe even glossy screens have a "coating" on them to prevent scratches on the glass surface which are easier to do because it's not protected.
-
Well, what the guy did to his screen I did to mine LG and it worked. And was 100% a normal Matte screen in good conditions. It even had no scratches.
And now it's probably the most mirror-like screen I have ever seen (It's really like a mirror)
I don't know for the laptop, but to me it looks like it also has the same thing, but since it's new, and I tried dry, it's so damn hard, but I scratched it, and I have seen that the borders outside that thing I said it look like a sticker too, It actually has the GLASS under it on the borders, so I think it might work.
But like I said, If I damage it, I will be so screwed, so I'm scared to try.
Keep Cool -
Is that what it looks like to your eyes? Colorful like that? Mine has a grain but it is colorless.
The matte coating prevents reflections and makes the screen easier to look at. I live with the grain. -
It doesn't look as bad as the picture I shown. But it definitely looks bad with a lot of grain.
And yes they look like it has color dots on them.
And I have my old laptop with Gloss screen, it's so damn nice, looks like crystal and the image is a lot more soft.
Never had problems with reflections either since I only use it in indoor, and while in a gaming for example I just can't see reflections, unless it would be a all black game.
ps: I wonder why I paid more for the matte screen (at least i know they are more expensive) to even have a worst quality with the huge amount of grain (so sad Clevo not making high gloss anymore on this model).
Keep Cool -
Matte aren't more expensive, it depends on quantities made. Apparently the matte screens were not easily available, so they just cost more. Not to mention that they all come stock with the glossy screen and have to swap out the LCD with the matte, so some labor is involved as well.
-
-
It should only be whatever film is on there then the glass. Water isn't any better especially tap water because if it seeps behind the screen it could short something. In any case I wouldn't advise anyone doing this unless they are willing to risk making their LCD useless.
-
But hey my LG 19 inch LCD back then Was expensive, and it's just a normal matte scree with NO VISILE DOTS OR ANY KIND OF BAD THINGS.
And actually it was just a organic plastic Anti Glare layer above the screen (But it had top quality, not this non sense used in this laptop screen).
If I wasn't too scared to damage the screen I would do the same as I did to my LG and remove it.
But since the LG had years and wasen't led, it heats a lot, and it was so easy to remove the layer, there wasn't glue already.
I tried on this laptop, but without wet papper, and made 20x more strength and still it doesn't want to pill off. But it scratched it, and under it I see normal GLASS, that's why I think it's just a crap AG layer above a very shiny cool LED SCREEN.
ps: No one willing to do this on a laptop??? tutorial is on first page by the way.... (I just sold my old matte laptop like a month ago, or else, I would be doing the tut on it, and specially because it has 2 deep scratches that won't ever go out until removal of the matte protection).
Keep Cool -
Well, if anyone has BIG, HUGE, IMPORTANT INFO, TOO LATE! (couldn't find any info on any place, and not even hours surfing the best friend GOOGLE. Too bad this forum seem to have no screen makers in it
.)
I'M ACTUALLY DOING IT AT THE MOMENT (I already have wet paper above it).
I got so pissed by looking at the ugly grains, which is so bad that I can't even see people's differences over the internet between a good quality no grain MATTE screen and a grainy matte screen. You know WHY? WELL because every god damn picture and the whole screen has huge colorful grains everywhere
All I can say is:
>> Welcome to the death of a brand new screen (the laptop only have like 3 months or so), and to like 4 or 5 months of my savings if it needs a new screen after this...
ps: There's no going back, and please pray for that the glare cover come out. Also if it doesn't peel off, remember water damage the Anti glare, so if it doesn't come off, and even if the screen is OK, I will have the front AG all distorted
.
Keep Cool -
I just removed the first few inches of the cover.... It's looking shinny .
I just hope my duct tape have made the job of stopping the water...
HELL YEAH!
ps: I hope it's working. Also If the actual dots are really bad quality screen, I will get so damn PISSED for so much work for nothing and will still need to buy a screen later...
Keep Cool -
I think you're crazy hahah
Loving the use of your text sizes and colours lol -
(No, this ain't photoshop. I have reflective keys on the laptop, and I aimed a white led at the laptop keyboard, and it's reflecting well on the NEW CONVERTED FROM MATTE TO GLOSS SCREEN:thumbsup
NOTE: This ain't FAKE. This is not a sticker layer that you buy in a Computer store. THIS IS A TRUE NORMAL MATTE SCREEN, just like my LG from yesterday!!!!
Time for some cleaning now, then I hope everything is fine with my new GLOSSY SCREEN.
For all the hours of GOOGLE research, and after thousands of questions about people wanting to convert Matte screen to glossy... WELL NOW YOU KNOW. (All I knew from google, was the knowledge that it could be done on some home screens, 0 answers about a laptop screen. Now I believe all matte screens can become CRYSTAL CLEAR, so now you can buy a very cheap LCD for home that usually is MATTE, and make it look CRYSTAL CLEAR). But well Can You Damage it? Well, YES it's always possible, and I still don't know if mine WORK!
ps: So, now you know the SECRET!!!!!! THANK ME if it ever help
Keep Cool
And well here it is:
(the actual right laptop is a TRUE GLOSSY laptop screen, i know it doesn't look like it is... it's because of pic).
Did I get ride of flashing colourful dots? Well, YES. But I can see that the screen is really not the highest quality, but it looks GOOD
Where are the dot grain now?
(all the effects seen are from camera, it's clean now, and all i can see from close are pure PIXELS:thumbsup
Color testing and pixel testing.
No water leak, no dead pixels. 1st picture is actually PURE SNOW DEEP WHITE (camera doesn't show it).
The last picture, actually is not with screen off, It's actually on, just showing black fullscreen color (improved a lot the quality, no more gray's on the black. It looks deep black, almost like if the screen were off)

Ok, you are crazy, but congrats on a job well done.
Now go on and clean that damn room... -
Thanks .
But hey the room was vacuum cleaned like 3 days ago however yeah, It is full of equipment and things.
Oh BTW, the black table under LG LED TV is also CUSTOM MADE BY ME.
All shinny black (with shiny grains), and with a good quality COAT of pure transparent varnish!
Metal structure was free and in good conditions (They were going to throw it in the garbage because it had no table), I restored everything and made a very cool modern one.
It was cheap!!!
And BTW:
(my console)

Haha nice job. I will keep my matte cover, as I bought a matte screen for a reason.
