Hey, I was wondering what Sager/Clevo (and Clevo clone) owners thought of their LCD screens. Have any of you compared them to the LED backlit screens of laptops such as the Sony ones and others equipped with the LED backlit.
I have been wanting a laptop with the LED screen for the quality but also for less heat/energy. But, whenever I look at notebooks that have the LED, they are missing something else I want.
For e.g., most are brand names and since I'm in Canada, most are not as customizable. I've only come across Lenovo and Sony as those brands can be customized and ordered in Canada. Except, the Sony is missing eSATA which I would like and Lenovo only have some models with LED. I also would like DDR3 RAM although it's just a preference.
The Sager/Clevo notebooks including such clones (I don't know what else to call them - e.g. Eurocom M860TU) have just about everything plus they have good customization options. The only negatives as I see it, is price (VERY expensive) and none have any options for a LED screen that I know of.
So, I am interested in the quality of the screen. I don't know who makes them and I haven't read/heard any info of how good they are.
If you can provide any info or have a comparison with LED screens (maybe you were comparing to a Sony Vaio Z or similar), please post!
The Clevo M860TU is a more powerful system than the Sony Vaio Z and the only thing that I like better is that the Sony is lighter and I prefer the Sony keyboard. I'm comparing those two because I think those are the top contenders for what I want. I also think the HP dv5 series is good but only if I want to go to a lower price range.
I like that the Clevo ones (Eurocom) offer drivers for XP whereas for both Sony and HP, drivers seem scarce or it's a major hassle to find them and install.
Anyway, this topic is mostly about screen comparison so I won't digress any further.![]()

LED screens are beautiful, but there are plusses and minuses to everything. There is both the hypothetical and real world, too.
Eventually, LED screens will probably be more energy efficient, but at the moment it is a bit of a wash. Since the power efficiency of an LED is based on the number of LEDs in a screen, a lower LED count means lower power consumption. However, at present--in order to achieve the higher resolutions people want, the number of LEDs is pretty high and the power cost is roughly equal to an LCD. I've not noticed any real difference in comparably laptops as far as battery life.
So, not much of a reason to move to them yet. Also, LED screens cost more so laptop makers may be waiting to keep costs down in this tighter economy.
Finally, Clevo tends to make gaming machines...LED response rates are slower than comparable CFFL screens ~25ms compared to < 5ms. I don't play many games, so I cannot say how much of a difference you will see (and the laptops with LEDs I have played with aren't really gaming laptops).
That said, LED screens are brighter, are thinner (and therefore lighter), and don't fade over time.
I think eventually LEDs will replace the LCD screens, but I think we are still a generation away before we see that--though you will see a lot more LEDs by the end of 2009 -
think he meant LED backlit LCD s, not OLED, amirite?

I can't decide whether to go for the more powerful Clevo clone or go after one of the lighter laptops that has a LED backlight screen.
I don't think there's any notebooks available with OLED?
I won't game on the notebook but there are a number of features in which the Sager/Clevo (Eurocom ones, too) have that I want:
eSATA
P8400 Centrino 2 CPU
DDR3 RAM
3 or 4 usb ports
DVI
HDMI (if not DVI, it must have HDMI)
The only feature/hardware it doesn't have that I was also looking for was a high quality screen and LED backlight. Some people say the screen is dim. I don't know how much, though. Obviously, enough people like these laptops.
It's a bit heavy, too but if the above features are all present, I don't care as much about weight.
I like the Sony Vaio Z and Apple notebooks because of the design, LED backlight and weight but they are missing eSATA and I think most Apples are missing the HDMI or DVI ports.
I think Dells have some of what I was looking for but so many are alleged to have faulty Nvidia graphics chips I was going to overlook those.
So, what is left, is wondering about the Sager/Clevo screen which is why I posted. -
Indeed. But by the time LED-screens have matured enough, OLED will be on its way.

There are OLED displays large enough for a notebook right now but there is a very good reason OLED technology is not incorporated in desktop or notebook flat panel displays at the current time: longevity. Typical lifetime of an OLED display is about 10,000 hours vs. at least 30,000 hours for a conventional LCD display. I am sure that once the longevity of OLED displays is improved, they will replace LCD technology on flat panel displays since in every other respect OLEDs are superior to LCDs.
'Sager/Clevo screen' v.s. LED of other notebooks
