D: trying to defrag my hdd and my 320 portable hdd after.. its running at 67 degrees C and i was wondering what to do... i need to make a system image to back up before i change my bios from xp to vista supposedly that will help the temps. I put my laptop on a cookie metal sheet core temps when down xcept the hdd. is there a way i can put the fan of the sager 8662 at max settings anything else indexing is paused. should i call xoticpc on a faulty hdd or is it just b/c my bios is set on xp and im running win 7 64 bit. i will try runny xp and see if temps go down. Dont have time to mail my laptop to get fixed b/c im going to college i am hoping this works out. sorry about the punctuation[ running on the 500gb hdd]
i changed to normal basic windows background hoping it will help ... 68 oC now my house temp is like 85 oF

the fans does not have any connection whatsoever to the HDD...
its the m860etu design flaw that there are no fresh air going directly into it from the backplate because it doesnt have HOLES..
drill some holes on the part that is exactly below the hdd section in the backplate..preferably 1 big hole...and then cover with mesh..that should worked -
anything less invasive? i mean something i can do now. i will change the bios after i back up the files

so...where did you actually get this "new" BIOS? -
wow that is way way to high. your room temperature has a lot to do with it. can you go and sit in your fridge while you defrag
defrag and virus scans are a pain as it always pushes up the temperatures.
2 things you can do.
disable the o/s defrag and download Smart Defrag Here. its a lot quicker and you can actually see what is being moved.
secondly you need to buy a cooler. zalman are most peoples faverout but i think you need something more powerful due to your room temperature so have a look at the NZXT CRYO LX laptop cooler Review HERE or HERE -
i know about the room temp problem but im moving to new york and my roomate and i plan to leave the window open so when fall comes room will be like 50-70 cF lol so im trying not to have to buy a large cooler if i wont end up needing it...i will buy one before next spring though when i have money.

He's not getting new bios, he's changing from operating system xp -> vista, so that you can enable ahci, allowing you to use that intel matrix manager.
