My HD6970 for some reason stated getting rediculously hot while gaming. It didnt used to though. I wondered what had changed. I tried drivers, NOPE. I tested a few different games and all ramped the GPU temp up to 103C. Tested my A/W M18X with 2x6990 and they ran cool as a cucumber on the same games. Hmmm. I took the heatsink off and noticed the paste looked like it wasnt being compressed. THen it hit me that I had messed with some different GPU and must have bent the hold down tabs on the heatsink. I bent them up about 5 mm and repasted. I tightened it down and reloaded the game. [Serious Sam 3 which is actually pretty fun] and now my temps never rose above 75C. A simple adjustment to the hold down tabs was all it took to put more pressure on the heatsink so it could do its job. Hopefully this helps someone else.
