the card is not faulty. it means the vbios that has been flashed onto the 1060 is a gsync vbios and it's not compatible with your laptop.

don't fret, you just need to find another 1060 vbios and flash it.

I had a similar issue when installing the 1070 into my P870DM-G where it persisted from the BIOS screen to Windows and I am assuming it's doing the same here. flashing the vbios with another vbios should fix it. try any of the MSI labeled files here:

    <link removed>

Unfortunately you only have 2 options.

EDIT: don't expect gsync to work because it won't. the motherboard does not contain the GPU ID to make it work anyway.

EDIT 2: Use the official MSI 1060 vbios in the post below.

Anyway, try and check what vbios version you have and flash the latest version. hopefully it should go away. if you're successful then we can add this to the list of upgrades that can be done safely.

Scratch the techpowerup link, how about trying the latest version from MSI:

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT62VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html#down-firmware

try the non-gsync version since gsync doesn't work. they should come with nvflash so it should be easy to do.

So yeah, try doing this first before freaking out. Let us know if you need help with using nvflash because there's no point in freaking out if the fix is so easy.

    try the other version.

I went back to find which vbios i used to flash my 1070 with and it was indeed a gsync vbios and it worked fine.

You have to flash a compatible vbios for the card. After that it's smooth sailing.

Well I bought the 1060 from China, MSI card so we will see how smooth it is to get it working in the old Clevo P150EM, this older vintage may still be kicking ass 6 years more.

    Check this thread.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/index.php?threads/805136/

It looks like the upgrade is doable. That's the thing about places like Eurocom, they don't tell you that this vbios stuff happens. I suggest that you download both vbios versions from MSI.

If your laptop has a prema bios then you could bump up the TDP to make it run better.

Yes the Chinese got it running with some tweaks, I done a lot of resources beforehand just to make sure after all its over 500 dollars. If only I could remove this Intel processor junk and replace it with AMD

Another really annoying thing I noticed, my TN display is extremely orange-red hue, if I look at my HP EliteDisplay for a few hours and then back to the Clevo I notice it right away, but my eyes adjust eventually to the Clevo display.

    Its using the Optronics display:
    http://www.panelook.com/B156HW01 V4_AUO_15.6_LCM_overview_686.html

    Really annoying.

I just received my MSI GeForce 1060N 6GB from AliExpress.
I will post some info and how it went installing it after I received the Arctic Cooling pads, some guy said it gets quite hot during use so I might have to add lots of RAM coolers to the heatsink to increase surface area.
The 8970M being a very hot card itself it usually only does 71 degrees on 100% load.

Sorry, I would if I could but my Clevo P150 only has a 180W adapter and a 55W & 100W card already pushes it to maximum load it can take, the power port is not designed for more than 180W sadly, anymore and he will just start drying the battery.
P170 should have no issue with 150W cards as it got a bigger adapter.

really? the TDP of the 1060 is like 75W or thereabouts. I'm sure you can bump it a little and then just overclock the rest of the way :p

Do you know how I can do this? I have only done it for AMD cards using AMD utilities never for nVidia as far as I know they lock down their cards like the North Koreans lock their borders.

Apparently the vBIOS I have is rated for 80W so I can jump it to 20W and get the 100W its also about 200 - 300Mhz slower than the desktop card.
Do I need to modify the vBIOS or can I use a program? I know about EVGA Precision but I heard nasty things about it and regarding Samsung displays, so I will avoid it like the plague.

You need to manually program the vbios chop I believe after editing it. You need a low voltage flasher too.

I was interesting in knowing the difference between the GTX 980M and GTX 1060. When Looking at benchmarks it seems the GTX 1060 isn't as overclockable as the GTX 980M, at least the GTX 980M overclocked is very slight above the overclocked GTX 1060, while stock the GTX 1060 is superior.

Here is mr. fox who has the record of the highest OC GTX 980M:
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10122415

GTX 1060 on new system with desktop CPU:
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10867787

Here is Prema with highest OC GTX 1060M on older system:
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11429442

Even when looking at mediocre overclocks the GTX 980M seems to beat the GTX 1060M:
    GTX 980M http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5947854 @ 1.352 MHz
    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5947854

    OP's GTX 1060M: @ 1.873ghz
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10867787

So far looks like OC GTX 980M > OC GTX 1060M

You have to take into consideration the different processors used, I found that different processors will have a huge impact on the final results, though its true that the 1060N is 80W and I am looking into how to flash it to 100W TDP, and if I am successful I will post another 3DMark result.

just use @Coolane's pascal TDP app and you should be good. you'll also need to flash it directly to the vBIOS chip on the GPU so it's better to test the GPU before you mod it.

I ignored the total score and only looked at graphics score. Which has nothing to do with CPU.

You will more easily maintain a 1060 overclock. The 980M had a LOT of work put into it so the top scores are basically like liquid nitrogen benchmarking to most users, not really applicable.

So you're just going to ignore the slight overclock results as well? As i posted, even "normal" overclocked GTX 980M is stronger than "normal"overclocked GTX 1060

The 980M is more expensive than the 1060 at least what I paid for mine anyway.

And its not way ahead the 1060 so all the downside specially the monstrous heat that card makes and not to mention way more power it consumes just wont justify it over the 1060
But if you already have 980M then upgrade makes no sense.

You might be expecting a bit too much from the 980M. You have to keep in mind the stock boost is 1127mhz.

The standard vBIOS is also limited to something like +135mhz offset so anything over 1300mhz was already "beyond normal" and required a modded vBIOS.

The main problem in almost every case is power delivery. Most cards didn't have enough power to handle higher core clocks without black screening.

From personal experience, the most I could ever pull from my 970M (still GM204) was 1338mhz on the core but that was quite unstable and pushing any more volts would black it out due to VRM overload. The reality was what I could only reliably run it at around 1250-1270mhz

I had a 980m mxm card that maxed out around ~1206mhz for the core. More than that and result was always a black screen....

Actually the GTX 980M is way cheapter than the GTX 1060m.

But you're right, the performance is basicially the same. Even tho the GTX 980M seems to scale better in overclock.

Nice, its cheap on Taobao but a little more expensive than what I paid on Aliexpress, did you ask the guys at Taobao to hide the price on the package? That is what I always do to avoid that nasty import tax.
I am going to buy the 580 MXM one its a black card maybe next week, we will see when my paycheck arrives, if it wont work I will resell it on eBay.

If you get it and do that, mind posting benchmarks and OC's? Would appreciate it! :)

What is TDP? How you change it and what value would make it match the desktop version?
