can you play 1080p movies on a WSXGA display?

I am asking because I have an external Blu Ray drive already.

Yeah, you can. It'll just display at WSXGA resolution.

    1) you can play 1080p (1920x1080) movies on a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen... but it will be down-converted to fit the screen for full-screen viewing.

    2) when you are talking about an external Blu Ray drive, I hope you mean one that is using a USB or Firewire format... which would work fine with the correct software (ex. PowerDVD) supporting those playback formats.

... because if you mean a stand-alone Blu-Ray player using HDMI, component, etc.... then you are out of luck because you will only be able to play on your notebook's LCD screen with a video input (from you built-in TV tuner) with composite RCA video or S-Video (which tops out at 480i).

Then you should not have any issues as long as you are using a media player that supports the Blu-Ray film.
