I know the standard is 9.5mm high slots for 3 drives, but if the slots are on top of each other could you fit one 12.5mm drive in the area? Will the BIOS support a 1TB drive?

If the stores offer them in the configurator it means they fit.

They don't offer it because it doesn't fit in the standard 9.5mm slot, but that's not what I am asking. I'm asking if two of the slots are on top of each other they would be 19mm high and you could easily fit a 12.5mm high drive in (1 drive would then take up 2 slots), has anyone done or tried this?

I thought you want to put 2x12.5 mm on top of each other.
Yes you can fit one 12.5 mm in the bay where you usually put two 9.5 mm on top of each other. I did it for my D901C and I am sure it will fit in the x7200 since the boxes are similar. Only the thickness is different.
At least one person from this forum claimed (s)he put a 12.5 mm hdd on top of the battery.
One will go for sure and take 2 slots, but maybe it will go also on top of the battery.
Before you buy a 12.5 mm hdd I have to warn that I was disappointed about mine ( one of the first 1TB models), slow and too hot, definetely not good for putting the OS on it, but reasonable for large files. -
Cool thanks for the info. Yeah it is for data only, and will hibernate much of the time probably, I will have all of my OS and apps on a Crucial C300 256GB SSD
Which should be plenty fast.
