I'm posting here because I'm %90 sure I will be getting one of getting a Sager/Clevo 8170 real soon. I have built 6 desktops and I have used Nvidia exclusively so I'm a bit ignorant about AMD products.

I have no interest in 3D games or movies but I would like the faster refresh rate, I built a machine for a friend and he bought a 120Hz monitor and I was very impressed with the quality of BC2. I was thinking about using a 120 Hz monitor in my next laptop. It is my understanding that the 3D technology as exclusive to Nvidia. If this is true then would going with a 6990m reduce the effect I would get with a 120Hz screen.

For 3D, get nvidia. For reasonable pricing-performance, get AMD.

I guess what I'm asking is if the 6990m will run at 120hz.

Externally Yes, but if you get a P170 w/ the 120Hz screen built in you HAVE to get a nV card or it won't display anything.

But 120Hz via DVI or HDMI yea either will do that.

Get the 6990M and support AMD's endless struggle against Nvidia.

I am supporting AMD and I love their low pricing and performance. I like to have the best of the best hardware, top of the line, at cheap prices. AMD delivers just that. For my needs (SC2 primarily), this card rocks like hell, temps are 69'C at SC2 on Extreme settings, whereas the Nvidia GT540M that I had on my Acer, had like 82'C temp on medium graphics. With low fps on top of that.

it's kinda a no brainer for me. 120hz is nice, but for that price point along with nvidia's overpriced stuff? nope. but if you have the money, go for it.

THat driver issue used to be the other way around years ago. AMD put together there Catalyst team and drivers were awesome. Now not so much. Not sure why they build such wicked good harware and dont follow up with great drivers.
