    New member here.

I chatted with xotic support to get some answers. I thought that I might as well post the conversation here, just in case. The log has been altered for privacy reasons and ease of reading.

    120hz 3D screen upgrade for Sager np8170/Clevo p170hm

    1. Can this screen be used with any current 400m series card besides the GTX 485? 3D support? 120hz support?

    2. If I chose to upgrade the card in the future, would I lose 3d support, or even the 120hz refresh rate?

    3. When the GTX 580m is released this summer, will it be fully compatible with the 120hz 3D screen? If not initially, will a software update/bios update be available in the future?

    4. Will the GTX 580m even be configurable for this laptop?

    Jeremy P: hi copelandmaster

Jeremy P: Have you had any previous contact with anyone from Xotic PC via email, chat, or phone?

    copelandmaster: none

    Jeremy P: thanks
you can use the 120 mhz screen with cards other then the 485, but it will not support 3d
    it will look great though
    as to the 580 card,
    sager hasn't told us yet

copelandmaster: can you talk about the release window, or no?

Jeremy P: i'm looking for it now

    copelandmaster: thanks

Jeremy P:! Nvidia Works on GeForce GTX 580M Graphics Core - Softpedia

copelandmaster: I heard that the m17x screen had the same deal. thanks anyway. reading link now

Jeremy P: i'm betting sager will make it work
assuming its actually faster then the 485

copelandmaster: it's probably just a slight overclock/rebrand anyway, like the 560m. I guess that's it then. Thanks for your help

Jeremy P: Please let me know what other questions you have. If you do place an order I would like to continue to be your advisor from XoticPC. oops, double post lol
you think you will go with the 485 or wait and see?

copelandmaster: I'm still thinking about it. It's a lot of money

    Jeremy P: it is.

copelandmaster: Will probably decide in the near future. That's all

Jeremy P: ok contact me if you have any questions

    copelandmaster: sure

I assume you are mostly getting at future 3D Support on new future GPU's, is that your main concern? Most likely yes but obviously without any details being provided by Sager/Clevo at this point on the new GPU's one can't say with 100% certainty.

    1. You'll get 120hz support no matter the GPU- it's a feature built in to the monitor and that's one of the support refresh rates. 3D support only works on select cards. In all honesty, anything below the 485m wouldn't have a ton of horsepower to drive 3d anyway so it's a moot point. Remember that 3d Vision cuts framerates in half, and that the 485m is only equivalent to the mid range 460 or 560ti desktop cards. For reference, I have a personal reference desktop running SLI 470's and it struggles with 3D on a few games. To go lower than the 485m means you'll have to crank back details. For what it's worth, the 460m does 3D Vision as well (though terribly, for the above mentioned reason).

    2. You won't lose the refresh rate, that's determined by the screen, not the GPU. You may lose 3D if Nvidia chooses to remove the feature from new cards, but that's entirely up to them.

    3. Hard to say, the card is not available and no details are available for it. If they do make a 580m, it probably will do 3D though, as the 560m does it.

    4. Again, there isn't enough information. We don't really know any more than you at this point, that would be up to Nvidia and Clevo if this card comes to be.

I'm still waiting to hear if this screen will work with my setup? If not, when will the new matte screens come out? If it DOES work, then why in the world would I ever get the 60 Mhz screen over this one?

If the 560M can do 3D, then I don't see any reason why the 460M can't do 3D with or without an OC.

Yes. I'd rather not lose support on such an expensive laptop, should I ever think about upgrading (my estimated config is around $2600). Probably won't worry about that though, something similar down the line may come up again eventually.

    Thanks for the responses!

Has anyone else had the chance to try 3d vision on this laptop? Is it better than a 3d LED tv, specifically this one:

    Amazon.com: LG 47LX9500 47-inch 1080p 480Hz 3D Ready LED-Backlit HDTV: Electronics

My family just bought this in January. Cost Less than $1450. I havn't gotten the chance to try the 3d function yet.

Unless the display is listed on the Nvidia requirements page for 3D Vision it won't work with it.

    3D Vision Requirements

The TV may still let you do 3D, but you won't be using any of the Nvidia features to do it.

Oh, I know that 3D vision dpesn't work on conventional displays, unless its a DLP or a projector. I was just curious about the whole monitor 3d vs tv 3d thing. I heard that a monitor was better because its Hz thing wasn't just marketing/motion smoothing tech, that a motor was TRUE 120hz, and thus better at 3D.

ok the shutter 3dvision can even work with normal 60hz screen(by some means, bcz normally we cant enable it with non 3dvision ready screen)
but it get left 30hz right 30hz, so it is seriously flickering..........make one become psychopath :D

    Hi,
I need some feedback on the quality of the 3d screen, can anyone post some impressions, ie. vividness, clarity, brightness, etc...?

    Thanks
