Anybody know where I can get a 14.1" all-black Clevo laptop, rebadged or whatever? I really don't like the size of the 15.4" and 17" is wayyyyy too big. All I can see are rebadged Compals in the 14.1" screen size. Am I looking in the wrong places?

I believe that Clevo 14" notebooks are not really available... only 12", 15.4", 17".... etc

I recommend to go to www.xoticpc.com and check out the notebooks there, and you can get them custom painted... such as all black. (the paint job is warrantied as well) :)

Here is the 12" model (in 4 colors):

It looks good, but it looks like it uses cheap hardware rather than quality hardware as can be seen by the SiS core logic. Also, it doesn't seem to have a firewire port.

    Anything else? Maybe a 15.4" all-black Clevo?

its not cheap hardware... more to have a good quality ultraportable notebook with a budget chipset... since the system will not be used for gaming... which would warrant a performance chipset

Although there are a lot of good ultraportables out there if you are looking for performance for gaming and such.... check out:
    - Dell M1330
    - Sony SZ

I'm not looking for something for gaming, really all I need is a good chipset with a quality firewire port, which is something most companies don't offer.

In any case, i you want a good firewire port for any notebooks, pick on of these up:

They are not expensive, and is very high quality... and using 6-pin ports, rather than the 4-pin.

A firewire card would help but not enough to warrant purchasing one, as the on-board expresscard chipset is still being used.

It looks like I'm just gonna have to build a desktop since the companies who offer quality firewire only offer Windows Vista.

most ultraportable (13" and under) notebooks do not come with firewire.

You should also look towards MacBooks as well.

A 14.1" is preferred but if I can't find one of those then I'd rather go with a 15.4" than a 13" or below. I don't like OSX so Macs are out of the question.

Then I recommend to look at the new 14.1" Compal FT00
    - its got great performance and quality for the price.

For a bit more money, look towards these 14.1":
    - Asus W7S
    - Asus V2S
    - and Asus A8Js

Again, you can check these out at:

The problem with Compal and the Asus is that both use the Ricoh chipset.

Yeah, and the only companies I found who use it are Sony and Toshiba, but both only offer Vista on their laptops.

Oh, and Clevo uses it too I think.

I believe you can get it from one of the "big 3" Clevo distributors in North America:
    - www.eurocom.com (they have it on their site already too, but located in Canada)

If you want it within the US, I recommend to contact Sager or Pro-Star for it.

$1500 is a lot to spend, for that much I'd probably buy a Sony SZ over the M48R.

its should not be $1500.... if you are buying from Eurocom, you can contact them get the price down.

OR.... contact Sager (or their resellers) to get it for you for cheap.

you just have to call or email to ask.... they are pretty good about bringing down the margin near cost.

Again, contact Pro-Star and Sager (or their resellers) to see if you can order through them.
