I ordered my NP9262 a while back and then stumbled onto these forums. I started reading and most people have gotten the higher res with the super glossy screen. I was wandering did I make a poor choice in buying the lower one with a matte finish? Some things I did take into consideration is the face I would rather run native res on video games [newer ones] and still be able to pump the settings. Knowing this I choose the lower one because I knew it would cut my settings down for that reason. So if someone could justify my question it would be awesome :D

really only you could answer that one for yourself.

for me, if I would have ordered a matte 1650x xxx screen, I would have made a poor choice because after using and playing with a Full 1080 screen and having glossy goodness of it, and watching FULL HD DVD and Blu ray movies...

Plus gaming in the Highest res possible shiny and nice very HIGH res when available is also a awesome feat.

well you know where I stand.

This is a completely subjective question. Some people like high res, other like low, some people like glossy, others don't.

If you are planning on gaming, I think you are in better shape with the lower resolution for the exact reason you said.

If you are going to be coding, looking at large spreadsheets, etc. it may have been better to go with 1920 x 1200. However, IMHO, both res are much better than 1280 x 800. I use 1680 x 1050 all the time for coding and looking at large spreadsheets and it is great.

So, if gaming is one of the big things you want to do, in my book, you made a sound choice. :) Plus I like matte screens much much much better than glossy. :)

oh no! a 'glossy' vs. 'matte' match again!
    just kidding.
in all honesty, its truly personal preference. each has its pros and cons. i really dont notice a difference between the two... i use a matte at work and have a glossy at home and they both make me happy. its the muscle (or lack thereof) of the machines i have that make me cry. :p

    1900 glossy
1900 because in 2years this laptop wont be able to play game at high resolution so low resolution look better with the highest possible native res of the LCD

Glossy... well its my personal choice

matte lower res. it's still got a ridiculous amount of real estate for windows and such and matte is just too slick for me to pass up. i never realized how much i had to strain my eyes to look past the reflections until i moved to a matte screen and compared the two >_<

My ancient old inspiron 9300 has a 1680x matte screen and to this day and all the laptops I've gone through it still has the best screen.

You must be a newborn :), 2-3 years ago all lcd screens where Matte.
Generally speaking, glossy screens are more colorful and have better contrast.

    Personal Opinion

I like matte because if there is any light in the background, it will annoy the hell out of me reflecting off my screen > . <

I would prefer 1680x1050 resolution for two main reasons:

    1. Gaming. Who wants to game in non-native res? Not me! Good luck getting great framerates in Crysis at 1920x1200...

    2. Blu-Ray or HD-DVD movies. They play at 1920x1080. Who would EVER want to watch something with that kind of res on a tiny 17" screen? Please hook your notebook up to a 24"-50" 1080p screen and watch them properly. I've seen a 17" notebook play 1080p movies in native and in 1680x1050 res, they are almost identical due to the fact that the screen is so small.

I agree this is mostly personal choice. But for me the wuxga is the way to go because I do lots of photo editing and really need the real estate and resolution.

What, you can't play games on your notebook now? In 2 years you will be able to play the same games with the same performance as now. I don't understand your argument..

If there's one thing I've learned in the technology industry, it's that you cannot stay ahead of the game, not matter what kind of cash you lay down.

But taking your argument into consideration, you're saying this notebook is useless at both 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 when it comes to the future of gaming. So why would you pick 1920x1200 as the optimal choice? Wouldn't you try and pick the most compatible resolution for future proofing? (That being the lower 1680x1050 option.)

I opted for the WUXGA. Glossy. I would nver buy a matte screen again, glossy has just so much better contrast and brightness...

yeah starcraft is old but its one of the best rts made... and im pretty sure starcraft2 wont be as good as the first one

its mostly subjective. for me personally, 1920x1200 is just too small on a 17" widesreen and i can't deal with the reflections or eye strain caused by glossy screens. i ordered the 1680x1050 matte and couldn't be happier.

I like the glossy screens better i think, but i can't imagine how small 1920x1200 must be on a 17" screen....it looks great on my 24" monitor...but!

LOL my current rig is an inspiron 8500 15.4inch that is 1920x1200. I figure on a 17" it will seem huge ;).

The only reason I would consider going lower is to run native resolution on newer games longer. I'm not sure how well newer monitors handle non-native resolutions but my old dell doesn't deal well, everything gets significantly blurry.

I'm on the fence between the 2 formats for my 5792. I am not familiar with compatability between the 2 formats, but if I pick the WSXGA for the laptop and connect the DVI connection into my 46" 1080p HDTV (DVI-HDMI cable), will I be able to change the resolution up to WUXGA while connected or will it always stay WSXGA?

The wsxga only applies to the lcd screen of the laptop. If you connect your screen to an hd tv/monitor, then you can change the display settings to whatever resolution you need :)

1920x1200, I mean, you can watch full hi def without resizing, and you can always change to a larger DPI.

i got the 1680x1050 matte and love it. I had 1900x1200 on my dell and i cant tell much a difference between the two.. tbh i know mine isnt glossy, but it seems like it is lol

i think the 1680x1050 is the way to go, cheaper so i put more $$ into other things, and looks really really nice.. best for gaming too imo.
