Hey guys, I have a P170HM coming in the mail and I need to get a SSD to add into it. So I have about a $550 budget, so what would give me the better real world performance.

    Option 1:
    250GB Crucial M4 + 8GB Kingston Hyper X 1866mhz RAM

    or

    Option 2:
    250GB Intel 510 + 8GB 1333mhz RAM

The rest of the system is:
    P170HM
    i7 2630qm
    6990m
    500GB 7200rpm HDD (storage drive)

Also, does anyone know if there are any issues with Sandforce drives (like the OCZ Agility/Vetex series) and the P170HM?

    Thanks.

I too am curious about the Sandforce drives and their compatibility with the p170hm. I've read very mixed reviews about them all on newegg. Part of the reason I'm leaning towards the Intel is for dependability. I know the R/W speeds of the OCZ Agility and Vertex are higher than the Intel 510, but is it really going to be that noticeable in real life application or just in bench marking?

I'd always recommend Intel for reliability, but others have had good luck with other brands. As for RAM speed, the overall difference between 1333/1600/1866 is extremely minimal in real world performance. They tend to differ by about 4 FPS each in gaming. Only in synthetic benchmarks will there be any real difference.

That said, I'd take 16GB 1333 over 8GB of either of the others as that's roughly the price gap.

There are issues currently with Sandforce drives (especially the Vertex III), so they're best avoided if possible.

    or option 3: Crucial M4 256GB SSD + 8GB 1333MHz ram

that is by far the best option.

I dont know why gamers think that the higher bandwidth of the RAM would benefit them at all.

It's JEDEC plug and play so it looks like you should be able to, but it probably isn't worth it. As I said before, the impact on gaming will be minimal. You'll only see any real increase in synthetic benchmarks. I'd go for 16GB of 1333 at the same price level.

i have an OCZ Vertex3 SSD in my P150HM and what i can recommend you is DO NOT DO THAT! DON'T BUY OCZ, not just because of Clevo issues but rather ENDLESS "RANDOM" PROBLEMS YOU WILL GET AND YOU WILL NEVER GET A FIX FOR (or so it seems)

Buy Crucial M4. I guess same as Intel but much cheaper. Since new 000 firmware it became one of the best options at all considering not as high prices as for Intel.

I suggest you buy 1600MHz Kingston HyperX RAM. It is cheaper than 1866 but still better than stock RAM.
