    Sexy comp, mine just arrived.

2 silly questions though, how do i update my bios? And second, whats a good external fan for it?

Some more questions, how do i turn off bluetooth? I can make it not autodetect stuff, anyway to just turn it off?

And what are some standard running temps? I checked a few of the other threads are all lower then mine, which is currently cpu @ 65 and hdd @ 65.

    edit: this is on xp

Lol that's a hot HD I guess your room temperature is high, verify if Intel Matrix Storage Manager is installed and up to date. For the bios I'm not really sure if that is usefull since your laptop is new it should have the last one but anyway link here. FN + F12 to turn off bluetooth. And I Don't use/know any notebook cooler

    HDD is very hot.

did you make sure to install the latest Intel Matrix drivers?

and disable the Vista services that constantly access your HDD?

Whoa, call the fire department. 65*C is a ball breaker for the hard drive.

Install the latest chipset drivers, followed by the Matrix drivers.

What hard drive do you have anyway?

Sounds like the Seagate 7200.4 to me.

Have you tried installing the software above and giving it another spin?

If it goes to 65 or over 65C, load or not, you need to contact your seller to fix this issue.

I think my comp isn't in raid mode or ahci mode.

Is there a way without a reformat to set it so?

Under the raid controller it says: (Something it seems randomly generated) IDE Controller

Under the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller it says:
    Intel(R) ICH9M/M-E 2 port serial Ata storage controller 1 -2928
    Intel(R) ICH9M/M-E 2 port serial Ata storage controller 1 -292D

Comodo is great for the Firewall ONLY.

do not install anything else... I know, I have tested it thoroughly.

the Comodo Defense+ and Anti Virus needs some serious improvements and maturing before I can recommend them.

the Comodo suite together creates some serious performance issues that are needless.

so instead I recommend the following freeware:
    - Firewall: Comodo Firewall-ONLY (no Defense+ either when installing it)
    - Anti Virus (choose only 1): Avast! 4 Home Free Edition / AVG Free Edition / Avira AntiVir Personal Edition

as for spyware removal, I recommend the following freeware:
    - Spybot: Search and Destroy (manually used, manually updated, run once a month and you are good)
    - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (manually used, manually updated, run once a month and you are good)

Thats my combo that works and is free and keeps the system fast.

under 60C is good.... so I would not worry when its in that area.

as for updating the Intel Matrix drivers... you might want to shoot an email to your vendor about that issue... since they were the ones that configured it with XP when you got it.

Wouldn't there be significant damage after a HDD reached 65 degrees, regardless of how long it was at that temperature?

    no significant damage yet.

one can test this by doing an HDD diagnostic or test... HDtune can check for errors as well as benchmarking it.

the easiest way is to just slipstream the AHCI driver into the XP CD that you were given.

    use nLite

You need to go in device manager
    > right click on Intel(R) ICH9M/M-E 2 port serial Ata storage controller 1 -2928
    > Select update then manually point the update to the .inf update utility from intel site
    > then it will ask for restart while it reboot put the bios in ahci and your good to go

Lowered my hard-drive by about 4C

I did, both ways, with nlite and with just the straight install, and its not working. So after i install it, i go to the bios screen. I go to the advanced tab, and no where does it say for me to set it to ahci/raid. On the advanced tab i have:

    Installed OS [XP]
    Legacy USB Support [Enabled]
    Boot time diagnostic screen [Disabled]
    Legasy OS Boot [Disabled]
    Reset config data [no]
    Power on Beep [Disabled]
    Battery Low alarm [enabled]
    Fan Control [automatic]

In the bios you have to set the operating system to vista and under it an option for ahci will be there but if IMSM is not installed it will do a nice BSOD

2 more question, playing games should not increase the hdd temp correct? Assuming that the drive has properly been defraged so hopefully theres little thrashing.

And is there a way to control the fan? I remember I had a sony with adjustable fan speeds.

HDD hasn't reached 60 again (or yet), although its peaked at 55.

7200rpm is "reported" to run in lower temperature than the 5400rpm.

I really would like a recomendation though for a laptop cooler specific for the np8662. From what i've read, the antec is a nono, since it sucks out air. How are those non usb cooler? They don't seem too reliable, but some people seem to swear by them.

I personally use Zalman NC2000. Reduces my temperature well. Around 10C-15C for CPU and GPU, and 3-5C for the HDD.

There are other ones that are proven to be good as well. Link in Anthony's post should help you with that.
