Ever had this problem? When I put it to sleep, the DVD drive spins up and awakens the laptop. Using Vista Ultimate 64bit, just started having this problem after an improper shutdown.

Used to happen to me a bit before when I was plugged in, but as time went on the problem kind of went away (windows updates probably). Since SP1 I've had nothing as serious anymore.

    I'm running 32-bit Vista Premium.

Must be something that hangs up the shutdown procedure.
I suggest using CCleaner to clean leftover programs that might force your computer to stay open or just check the power management for the dvd drive and set it so that it won`t allow to bring the laptop from standby.

Wow, it even does it when I have the drive disabled in device manager...

How do you check the power manager for the drive?

Did you check for a firmware update for the driver? That sounds like a buggy driver that doesn't handle sleep power mode well, or else the driver has to move the drive itself around before putting the drive to sleep (perhaps locking the read-head away - tucking it into bed :D ) and fails to block the feedback signal going to the motherboard (which would probably be interpreted by the system as a peripheral wake-signal).
