Hi,
I do some CPU/RAM intensive tasks that would benefit from higher frequency RAM if I could get it. I'm considering purchasing this RAM kit: Kingston HyperX Impact 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3L 2133MHz Laptop RAM HX321LS11IB2K2/16.
Just wondering if anyone here has tried running 2133MHZ SODIMMS in their P15xSM? I don't see any reason why it shouldn't run properly, but perhaps there is some limitation with the P15xSM motherboard that I'm not aware of. Can anyone attest to whether the RAM will function at 2133MHZ?
Thanks!

4th gen mobile CPUs support up to DDR3-1600. By design, anything faster than 1600 will still run at 1600 per the memory controller. Whether XMP is an option or not I don't recall on the P15xSM-A.
-
XMP is not supported but I have a modified BIOS which allows me to manually specify memory frequency and timings. I also have an i7 4930MX (which is unlocked) so I think I should theoretically at least be able to set the 2133Mhz frequency (and associated timings) in my BIOS. My main concern is whether this can actually run stably.
-
If you put in 2133 sticks that don't use XMP they will boot at 2133.
They should be stable as long as you haven't worn out your memory slots switching sticks over 50 times. Only EM and older systems have issues with 2133+. -

The 4930MX has the same memory specs (up to 1600) but you might be able to get away with 2133.

Ok sweet, thanks everyone. Looks like I'll be purchasing the kit and trying it out then. I'll report back in a week-ish!

my P150HM happily accepted 16 GB of 2133 Mhz RAM and I was even able to OC it to 2200 Mhz with tightened timings
@Ragib Zaman I see no reason why your machine shouldnt accept 2133 Mhz sticks, go right ahead! -

I ran some very nice Samsung chips at 2133mhz, just be aware not every CPU memory controller can handle it.

Have you got the ability to set the speed at the moment?
-
Yes, I can set Memory Multiplier, Base and timings in BIOS.
-
so just install and go!
as for timings at 2200 mhz, i was on a P150HM machine with a 2960XM cpu and corsair ram sticks so u cant just use the same settings...gotta check and see what works for your case
in any case, the highest ddr3 sodimm speed ive seen users here reach was 2400 mhz, just to give u an idea of what might be possible in best case scenarios.

Timings are more important than speed at that point though.

FWIW, I’ve seen someone with an i7-4910MQ use 2133MHz CL11 modules in your system (which he further bumped up to 2400MHz CL10), so you should be just fine.

Just got the sticks today and tried it out. Booted straight away at the advertised 2133Mhz, 11-12-13-35 timings, no BIOS adjustments needed. Couldn't manage to boot after trying to set it to even 2200MHZ so no overclock for me, but I'm happy with them! My Intel XTU benchmark went from 970 to 1070. I knew RAM frequency has a relatively high impact on XTU score but this improvement is much more than I ever expected
Hopefully this improvement carries over to a similar extent in my applications.

Playing with the timings is more important performance wise at that point anyway.
-
The stock timings were CL - tRCD - tRP - tRAS = 11, 12, 13, 35, and I think I've got them running fairly stably at 10, 11, 11, 34. Intel XTU score (average over 3 runs) is now sitting at 1130. That's up 16.5% from my average of 970 before the RAM upgrade. Very satisfied! Thanks for your help and advice everyone

Have you got access to tRAS?
-
Yup. I can access quite a few timing options, both in Intel XTU and BIOS. I'm rethinking whether my RAM timings are actually stable though. I always thought that if I could run 3 XTU benchmarks without crashing then it would survive the Stress test, but I can't even run the memory stress test for a full minute without BSOD. Maybe I can get away with running at the reduced timings anyway hoping the applications I run don't stress the memory to the same extent as the stress test.

The tRFC usually has some give in it, the primary timings leas so.
