I've got a 5793 and my 8800m gtx vid card has failed. The 8800's are hard to come by and really expensive from Sager. Has anyone used the 280M in a 5793? Can it be done?

No BIOS support. If you take a look at all of the released BIOS for the M570RU, you can see that many of the releases were made to fix issues with the GPU, mainly detection issues with the 8800M GTX and 9800M GT/GTS. Also, no user has tried to install the 9800M GTX in their M570RU, let alone the GTX 280M. However, because all those cards are G92's, part of me still says that it can be done. But to be on the safe side, I have sent an email to my vendor inquiring about this. I will post their reply tomorrow.

Tried several cards before in RU, 88GTX 98GTX Q3700 Q2700, all work....

I stand corrected. That's good news. Things are looking on the bright side then. I guess that's a yes for me too now.
An 8800M GTX to a GTX 280M would yield a healthy improvement for jaredmccoy. -

Haha, yeah. Give me a minute, I'll change the picture in my initial post.

Interesting... if someone could confirm the 280M works in 570RU I'm tempted to buy a 280M from XoticPC for my Sager NP5790...

Opening the latest SBIOS for the M57xRU(1.00.12) with an editor, we can find these cards:
I think it's not natively suported on the PCI ID side, 'cause on Clevo's support page there is'nt any reference to added support for 2x0M variants, only references to 9800M and 8800M parts...
But can work because of the similarities between G92's cards...

Well i hope this is true as i wont have to buy a new laptop, could save myself about two grand,If it does work will my x9000 cpu hold it back ie bottle neck the system? This 8800m gtx is a great card but is lacking in the newer games, what sort of performance gain do you think there would be?

I just got a response email from my vendor concerning the GTX 280M in the M570RU. They say that it is a no go.
I seriously need to find a "maybe" picture for posting in threads, haha. It seems like we're still on the fence concerning this dilemma. -
Similarities or not there has to be bios support or else the cards would be as good as dead weight inside a laptop. Like my Sager NP8660(Clevo M860TU), without the bios update the GTX 260M and GTX 280M would never see the light of day in it. -
So much for "User-upgradable" that Xotic advertises !
-
So then why does the vendor say it can't be done? What would it take to make it work? -

That is a completely unfair thing to say. This statement just means that nothing is soldered to the board, so you can change things if you want. It also means that you will not void your warranty unless YOU break something because of the upgrade. The fact that something is unsupported because there is no Bois support, does not change the validity of Xotic pc's statement. If I remember correctly, this laptop was removed from Sagers line-up before Nvidia released the GPU in question, thus you're statement has no logical application.
280M on a 5793
