tried many drivers, it would work perfectly for a long time, then freeze for 10-20sec,then be absolutely fine, then freeze again after a few hours.
this is in winXP. its driving me absolutely insane.
i had the same problem with vista/win7 but it would be just a sound loop and a split second freeze (almost unnoticeable), and it would rarelysometimes just lockup with no bsod no nothing
with winxp i managed to replicate the problem when navigating nvidia control panel. after the freeze happens, if i try to change anything in the control panel it will freeze for 10-20sec with every single click. this is only after the first freeze in a game.

edit: if i click buttons like a maniac the mouse will freeze too and the system will beep once until it unfreezes
edit2: rarely the game im playing will be all messed up unless i tab in and out once

Which driver versions have you used? Is Powermizer on (or is it even there?)? Also, which notebook model are you using?
-
its a 5797. i tried many different drivers, currently on dox 182.86
no idea about powermizer, but should be there
trying to figure out how to disable it -
uodate: it stops doing it when i use rivatuner to reload the display driver
it will however end up doing it again after i play a game for a while. corrupt drivers? cant be ive tried so many -
You can find PowerMizer under the "Mobile" section on the left-hand side of the Nvidia Control Panel. Turn it off.
-
same thing...
shorter freezes with 179.48 tho -
Have you checked the temps?
-
temps never exceed 80 celcius. i even had to stuff it in a pillow while playing (for a minute) to get it a tad over 80 as it was rock solid at 75 for a long time
i ran a few memtest passes aswell and it was all good. trying to find a hard drive diagnostic tool now.
what a pain -
tried to find any possible updates on the firmware and/or bios to no avail. anyone know where the latest files are. the clevo e-support site requires a password
-
downloading warcraft (since its the only game i play) from scratch and updating every single addon, keeping fingers crossed
-
^Hope you have the CD-keys
-
These are very similar issues that I also have with my NP5797, its at xotic right now for repairs.
-
Maybe you should try the latest WHQL XP32 driver for your system: 186.81
Link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winxp_186.81_whql.html
Note there is no option to disable PowerMizer in this driver revision, but it hasn't caused me any problems thus far (using 8800m GTX and XP32) -
the others are fine with just freezes.
game downloaded and installed, no joy
i wonder if i can rma just the GPU and not the whole laptop -
hm could it be the wireless card? i disabled it and plugged it in and havent got any hiccups for a couple hours worth of gaming
keeping fingers crossed.... yet again -
no joy
only gpu and lan drivers running. waiting for the last freeze before surgery -
surgery over, re-seated gpu, testing
worth noting that my temps dropped 5-10 degrees. i wonder what kind of crap sager applies -
Good to know, what did you use for the compound?
-
just some arctic silver i had laying around
it still freezes tho. interesting to note that i cant replicate the problem in battery mode. wonder if its the downclocking or the power brick -
any chance that theres any new bios updates for the GPU
-
-
good call, probably need to ask a reseller that has one on hand
-
hm so how picky can a game be to drivers?
running 185.85 and its been fine for far longer than any of the other drivers
strange since i distinctly remember running 185.85 dox and had problems still.
vsync caps at 50fps now tho, not at 60, . refresh rate is at 60 -
I usually stick to WHQL drivers now. Dox drivers are fun, but sometimes, games just dislike their behavior. Driver version 186.81 WHQL is what I'm using at the moment. Everything's working well, but there's no way to disable PowerMizer, which is a bummer.
