[email protected] + zotac 8800gt amp edition(700mhz factory oc) got me 15.4k
3dmark 06 score 2 years ago when i had them.

will np9280 with i7 920 + 280m will beat that score? also it's ddr2 vs ddr3 as well. spec wise np9280 should beat my old desktop no problem but i just don't think it will get me 15k benchmark score. =(

At best the 920 + OC'd 280M will get ~14-14.5k, but 3dmark06 is pretty pointless if you're benching with an i7 or high clocked quad. The results are so skewed that clockspeed is only what matters. But in games they'd be pretty even. The 280M has 16 more shaders, the 8800 gt gets slightly higher clocks.

Like said, the i7 is going to rip 3DM apart compared to a Q6600. Since each core can handle 2 threads, your looking at 8 2.66ghz threads running in parallel. Even if you disabled HyperThreading and compared it to an equally clocked Q6700, the i7 doesn't even give the older tech time to think about what its about to do. On chip memory management, no FSB, many other NB features integrated, and a complete redesign in how data is processed, make the i7 an absolute powerhouse of processing.

I always wonder how those new mac pros are doings. 2xi7 xeons running 16 threads. mmmmmm....

In game, depending on the game, the i7 does very well. CPU bound games such as GTA, World in Conflict, etc, see a HUGE performance boost with the i7, as can be seen here:

GTX 280m performs just slightly better than the 8800 GT.
