Hi guys! I'll be purchasing a sager 8170 later today. My build has the below options:

    8GB, PC3-10600/1333Mhz DDR3 - 4 x 2GB [subtract $50.00]
    8GB, PC3-10600/1333Mhz DDR3 - 2 x 4GB

I'm thinking of getting the 4x2gb sticks instead of the 2x4gb sticks. I figure in a year or two i'll replace the ram with a bunch of overclocked kingston hyperx 1866 ram. Would the 4x2gb option result in a drop in my laptop's performance? If not, it saves me $50.

    Thanks guys!

There's no functional difference in performance, having the 2 open slots for memory simply make it easier to upgrade in the future.

If you're planning to replace all the sticks in the future, then it doesn't really matter which configuration you go with. I'd go with the one that saves you money in that case, as you won't see any difference except empty slots otherwise :)

Of course 2x4 would be slightly more expensive. I would probably get 2x4 still, because it's easier to pawn off 2 sticks to someone rather than 4. (most laptops, especially <17", only have 2 SODIMM slots)

I agree. The 4GB modules are much easier to sell, for example here on the forum marketplace. :)
